I'm looking for reliable DVD burner to replace the stock Philips DVD-ROM drive that came with my Acer notebook. Any recommendations are welcome. over and out.
perosnally i would get an external burner. it is more upgradable & allows you to use with other pc's. thats just my opinion
Thanks for the input I prefer to have an internal unit though, I want to haul around as little as possible. I wish BenQ made a slim 1650/55 for notebooks...
yes an external would be to much to haul around, i dont know much about internal laptop burners so cant shed much light on the subject :-(

Good Choice! NEC is at the top of the heap as far as slimline, notebook burners are concerned. Price was super as well.
NEC burners Booktype DVD+R DL disks to DVD-ROM right out of the box, but not +R or +RW. For that you'll need a modified firmware e.g. Liggy & Dees, but that will void your warranty.
@neurokasm i 2nd that as a good choice... i have the much older version of that NEC...ND-6500A to be exact, i don't keep up with notebook burners nearly as much as i do with internal desktop models, but my particular NEC slimline burner is great...still kicking after well over a year in my Dell laptop~ as to the drives only booktyping the dvd+r DL by default, that's something that is also prevalent with Pioneer drives as well as the NEC desktop models...why the companies don't just make dvd+r/dvd+rw booktyped by default? i dunno...but it's EASY to get around them with the proper firmware... here is THE premier site to go to for ALL your NEC firmware needs: http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/ on the left hand side, just go under your "NEC-6750/6751" link and you will find your choices, i would recommend THIS particular one for booktyping : 201bt_rpc1.zip NEC 2.01 including booktype, riplock and RPC1 patch (Liggy) good luck w/ your new burner, i'm sure there were many improvements in the model you purchased compared to my OLD 6500A model, but mine still does the job just fine...NECs are good drives, i have the 3520A (desktop model) as well for a LONG time now and it's real solid. also, familiarize yourself with flashing those modified firmwares before you start..whether it be thru DOS or using a binflash utility~ have fun docTY~
What kind of Acer do you have? Are all the burners the same brand? I'm considering getting an Acer Aspire notebook, with an AMD chip. So you have any advice?
@HazelB this is the notebook i bought at newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834115222 i went for the $100 rebate, heh. i'm pretty sure they use the same drive in all their models that have dvd-rom drives, if you get a model with a dvd burner, you might end up with a different brand. not 100% on that though... I'm fairly happy with this notebook. the wifi works great. though there are/were a few things i've had to upgrade. since i've had it, i added some ram. also, i immediately bought a replacement battery on ebay. the stock battery only had about an hours worth of life, the replacement gives me about 3 hours.i've just ordered a hd, and of course a dvd burner. still waiting for the hd and burner though. the hd that came in this laptop is only a 4200rpm model (yuk), so i ordered a 7200rpm model to replace it. once i get that bad boy in there, i'm thinkin i'll see a huge performance increase. i guess for the most part my advice would be to go with a cheaper model notebook, and then upgrade it with the parts that you really want. i'm an amd fan, so i recommend going with an amd machine. hope this helps edit: although amd is my choice of processors, the intel-based machines seem to have a slightly longer battery life when compared to the amd builds. just throwing that out there.
