    Greetings,
    I'm searching for a new DVD-RW drive to replace my Lite-On which is currently acting like it's ready to retire. This replacement will be my sole drive used for burning everything, so I'd like to have something that's excellent for both CD-RW and DVD-RW. I am considering stepping up to Plextor, but have heard that their quality has diminished recently. Anyway, please post some suggestions and/or personal experiences you may have had with different brands. I'm open to just about any recommendations.

    Thanks!

    Get a BenQ ... the DW1655 LightScribe is an excellent drive and the DW1650 is expected to be the best available when it finally hits the shelves in the USofA ... Of the 7 drives that I currently own, the BenQ DW1640 is by far the best

    Maybe I'll wait for the 1650 to be released here in the states...

    edit: anyone heard any dates as to when it will be available in the US?

    I am salivating over that Benq1650. I must have it. The shipping costs
    is not too bad. I once paid $300 shipping on my giant subwoofer, so $15 I can live with.

     Get ready for the BenQ BW1000 ... It will be a real beauty ... Read this and start drooling!

     Hannover, Germany, 9th of March, 2006 – BenQ, a leading manufacturer of digital lifestyle devices, today announced its first “Trio” writer BW1000, a triple writer that encompasses BD, DVD and CD format support, which saves you from making any compromises among these technologies. BenQ BW1000 supports all Blu-ray Disc formats at 2X read and write, as well as the interface of the future – Serial ATA, which secures the data bandwidth while playing back high-definition contents, even for the most dynamical scenes. With BenQ’s BW1000, users can easily transfer high-definition home videos and art works to BD-R and BD-RE media, either 25GB or 50GB version, to share and store premium contents with convenience.

     BenQ BW1000 features revolutionary SolidBurn and Write Right technologies. SolidBurn automatically learns and optimizes the writing settings for recordable media and makes over-speed writing feasible and stable, delivering stunning drive intelligence to help users write any media at the desired speed. BenQ’s Write Right technology provides thorough protection during the writing process, which includes Seamless Link (for buffer-under run protection), dynamical jitter calibration (for real-time writing quality consistency) and Walking-OPC (for real-time writing power compensation) features.

    from CDFreaks

    ... something to ponder ...

    at 2x, just how long do you suppose it'll take to write a 50GB Blue-ray Disc?

    {edited to add the following estimate}
    At 2x, it takes around 27 minutes to burn a 4.38GB disc ... a 50GB disc is 11.4 times larger so after crunching numbers I arrive at a little longer than 5 hours to burn a 50GB disc at 2x ... whew!! that'll try the old patience ...

    You don't have to worry about that. 2x is actually at 72mbps so it will take roughly 90 minutes to burn a 50gb disc. Considering you can fit 14 DVD5 on one of those, you are technically burning at 9.25 DVD speed. They will eventually get to speeds like 288mbps (8x), so burn time will go down to about 23 minutes. That's not bad for a Dual layer disc!!

    If the 1650 isn't available in the US soon, I'll just go ahead and get the 1655.

    @catfreak
    Thanks for your suggestions.

    The DW1655 is one fine unit .. so far I've been resisting the urge .. I'm really waiting for one of my burners to take the ultimate dump, but darn it all, I've been purchasing good ones and they're all (all 7 of 'em) holding up grandly ... I'm gonna wait on the DW1650 since I already have a LightScribe drive (and I've only burned 50 labels with it) but the DW1655 does a little more than the average LightScribe ...

    Note: I hear that the DW1650 and DW1655 are gonna be the last BenQ drives to use the incredible Philips chipset ...

    I actually ended up getting this drive from Newegg:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106990

    It's inexpensive and I like how it comes with Nero and PowerDVD. I'm probably gonna get that DW1655 when I have a little more ca$h to spend...

    edit: sold that drive, got a BenQ DW1655 and I'm stoked on it!

    edit2: ordered a 1650 as well, hehe

    ps: Thanks again to catfreak, I should've listened to you from the get-go.

    I have the Benq dw1640 and it is a great drive. I was also wondering if any of you knew if it is ATA 66, ATA 100, or ATA 133 speed? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Not true! My Pioneer DVR-108 uses ultra DMA 4 and it does NOT support DVD-RAM.
