I've seen some mention of recording "modes", that you can hold one hour of video on a DVD if you burn/record in high quality (hq) mode while you can hold two hours of video on a DVD if you burn/record in standard (sd) mode. Not sure if there is a standardized label for these modes, but is it true that you can toggle the recording mode when burning a DVD? Does this option depend on the video software? I use Ulead Video Studio 11 (Standard Edition) and I didn't find any reference to recording modes.

Thanks in advance for any info... :)

Recording modes generally refer to recording directly to a DVD from another source. Is that what you're doing with ULead? I'd guess probably not. Usually one sees this termoinology with standalone DVD recorders.

Otherwise, recording modes are irrelevant to backing up or authoring DVDs. DVD5s hold a certain amount of data and that is what you're constrained by. If your file size is larger than DVD5 size you have to compress to fit. When recording directly to DVD. Some of the video data is omitted to reduce file size, the amount of omission depending on the recording mode selected.
