I've got a new recorder and I have a question about recording quality. Is there much difference between video recorded at low quality and video recorded at high quality but compressed to a similar file size? Does anyone have experience with this, or can point me somewhere else? I want to capture old vhs to dvd/files, wondering if it's worth the effort to capture in high quality and compress.
It just occurred to me that the recorder IS compressing the file for different quality settings. I guess I should just let the machine do that rather than wasting my time doing it.
Depends on the format, but most cases, hell yes. You should compress from higher quality to lower quality ONLY, not the other way around. Compressing low quality gives you shitloads of artifacting and very choppy video.
