Okay, so I have this incredibly cheap disc (ASDA brand) with data that I need (it's a DVD video, but I'd be content just to get the VTS_01_*.VOB files recovered from there). Yes, I was stupid enough not to have another copy. There's no protection mechanism on it. I was able to copy VTS_01_03.VOB directly into my C drive. Now I just need VTS_01_02.VOB and VTS_01_01.VOB, however, those files are too big and I get I/O errors in the middle. Here's what I tried so far - DVDDecrypter in ISO Read mode with "Ignore Read Error" checked. Unfortunately, it never gets past the "Extracting sectors" stage. - DVDDecrypter in File Mode - It wasn't able to get past 28%. - ISOBuster - no go. unable to extract any data from the disc. - DVDShrink - I was able to successfully analyze the entire thing under the "Re-author" option, but halfway through, I get a data error (cyclic redundancy check) message. (Reference: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/124000 - I tried the method there in DVDDecrypter. Didn't work.) - BadCopy - It was able to get through about half of VTS_01_01.VOB before it started getting read errors. - BlindWrite - After reading TOC, it tells me "DVD-ROM Incomplete" and doesn't let me read or copy anything. My Samsung DVD drive can't even recognize the disc (claims it's a blank cd-r), and only my Compaq DVD reader drive can read it. Unfortunately, it's a very old computer and I can't find any firmware upgrade for it. I've upgraded to the latest version (SB03) for my Samsung drive. Still didn't work. So, the problem as far as I can see is that there's some sector of data that's bad, and I was wondering if there are any more powerful "brute force" copying programs that can ignore read errors? Alternately, I'd like any recommendation for VOB splitting software that can start splitting at different parts (i.e. if I want to rip from 200 MB to 400 MB). So far, I've tried DVD Dumper, but it doesn't have the "continuation" function that I'd like. Any help would be appreciated!
the quality of the disk is measured by re ripping! If you can't get the disk to copy the files back onto your hard drive, you have crappy media. there is NO magic wand treatment about re ripping. If the disk is that bad and you used all these programs and still can't copy the copy, then I suggest that you use better media in the future and stop fooling around with crappy media cause you'll just end up doing this all over again and crying, [bold]Can anyone help me copy this copy!?[/bold] here is a media guide for you: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm Just stick to the rule: [bold]M[/bold]ade [bold]I[/bold]n [bold]J[/bold]apan! look on the lable of the spindle or box and make sure it has MIJ. Verbatim is the only exception to this rule as they are made in Taiwan and are the only top notch media coming from there! Buying top notch media doesn't cost more than the crappy stuff and you won't have headaches like this down the road! hope this helps so the next time you won't have this problem.
try using some furniture polish with a lint free cloth to clean the disk. not used it for a while, but you can use dvd shrink to cut frames out
Yeah, I know, I've been using Verbatim DVD+Rs for the past week and having great results with them (and re-ripping my old DVDs from back when I was a helpless n00b. ) This is one of the ones giving me lots of trouble right now. And thanks for the tip about DVDShrink. Will give that another try then.
Maybe tooth paste its worked for me I use a Disc Doctor it spends around an fixes the surface the clear plastic that covers the foil is pretty thick so you can't hurt it
You may be able to: 1. use DVDFAB Decrypter. It's mainly designed to break copy protection (and is apparently one of the best programs for doing it, and is free), but it also is good at disc recovery. It may take a long time to read the disc though. 2. ISOBuster may also help you to recoved the disc; 3. Failing all else, you may be able to save chunks of the file using a hex editor such Frhed to read chunks of the file and use the File->Save Selection As dialog. This can be pretty cumbersome and you may have to reassemble several different parts, but it may help.
Thanks for all the help offered! DVDShrink ended up being the software to save the day. I was able to use the "Re-Author" option and save the titles one by one. Only 3 of the titles were corrupted with the CRC errors, so by setting the Start and End on those titles to skip over the bad frames, I was able to salvage all of the video excepting about 5 seconds. Other tools I've found useful: - VOBBlanker - which ended up getting more out of a title than DVDShrink was able to, which allowed me to combine that one almost seamlessly - h2cdimage - this one I don't see mentioned a lot, and it should be. It's exactly what I was looking for in my initial post - it will read the DVD, create an image file, and slowly fill in the different sectors. It allows you to start, stop and resume without losing the progress. I was able to re-create 64% of my DVD, but it was just moving too slowly after that. It's a good tool that I would recommend to anyone else who needs it, though. Let this be a lesson to never ever use crappy media again. >.<
If it's on sale there's a reason. for any home movies I only use Verbatim and for sure don't use dvdrw ! just when you get that warm fuzzy feeling whith rw's they corrupt ! Bam, your files are gone
