I would appreciate any advice on this. I have a working reel to reel that I recently reactivated to attempt to convert tapes to digital format. I cleaned the heads but I still dont get great sound quality. I am not sure if the problem lies in the tapes or in the player (a Grundig from the 1980's). Any ideas how I could reconcile this? I basically need to play my tape in a known functioning reel to reel to see if they play the same I think.
Get a new blank tape and record on it. If it sounds good then you know the deck is working OK. The problem most likely is then either the other tapes are bad (may have worn with age) or there is a mis-alignment between the heads of the deck that made the tapes and the new deck. If the bad tapes where made on this deck and new recordings are good, then these tapes have lost their sound quality.
I appreciate your posts. Two questions: 1. What store would still have reel to reel players in the US? 2. Where would I get a new reel to reel tape to record to?

Reel to reel tapes are going to to be hard to find now. I agree that ebay would be a good place to try. Or maybe a garage sale. Also, a high end audio store "might" still carry some. Good luck.
