Currently I have Windows XP pro installed. During the install process I realized that some of the files were not installed and ignored, i think because of scratches or something. Well, my college gave me another xp pro cd to try but i dunno how to reinstall windows? I think it has to do with rebooting and running from cd but I dont know what to do. help?

probably c: which is also usually the default drive for windows.

i thought "repair" reinstalls windows without having to format the hd. which would prevent you from having to reinstall all other software. is this so?

So if I format the C drive which is my default drive which contains everything in it including C:/programfiles and C:/windows which contains system files, then I can install XP Pro from scratch?

The function REPAIR on an O/S system disk will replace after checking the checksum ,any files that is corrupted or missing ! It does not format a drive but makes it like an original installation.
I believe Jay05 prefers starting from scratch -- so he should select Format which ever drive he is putting the O/S on ! This will give him a clean install !

jeanc1 i love the way you respond so fast...
anyways you are right. I want everything off this computer that are files or etc and start from scratch. now is there anything that I should keep in mind? is there like a guide where i can look that tells me step by step on what to do after i format my C drive? such as partition vs unpartition i remember encountering that before...dunno what that meant though...

Looking at your specs under your signature -- I see you have a 64Bit processor !! you have just spent a lot of $$ for the latest hardware -- may I ask if you ever thought of maybe spending another $100 to make use of what you bought ??.. The Windows XP you are trying to install is a 32 bit one ! the hardware you bought will serve no purpose with it. OR are you waiting for the Vista O/S --- this will not be on the market till late next Fall !

If you install with that ""borrowed"" CD , you will see very little difference from what you had before; possibly a bit faster running on some applications like Video authoring/editing programs; a better frame rate in Games playing.

I guess i really don't have a choice as the xp pro is from my college. the vista o/s sounds like a good option and i guess i'll have to wait for it to come out. so you sure if i format my c drive, i can make a clean new install of xp pro? just double checkin...

Yes that is an even better guide -- it has pictures !! <<smiles>>

Careful when you get to the place where it asks for formatting -- you do want that , you said it's a clean install I want !! so reformatting will make your HD accept the new installation like if there had not been anything on the HD.

Good Luck , I have a hubby and 2 daughters screaming for their supper !
