I am new to this and have found a problem (for me anyways).

If I backup the whole DVD using DVD Shrink, etc, to my "no name brand" DVD-R's it won't play in any of my DVD players UNLESS I use the "re-author" tool and just burn the movie contents SAN the Menu's etc.

I think the problem lies in the Title Menu (like Paramounts that loads the preview vs. main menu option).

I would like to strip the "title menu" from the DVD but still have the Main Menu and subsequent menu branches be preserved (extra features, scene selection).

Is there anyway to just "remove" from the burn process that first menu selection so that upon load up the disc just goes to "main menu" automatically?

I am thinking this might fix my issue where the title menu keeps flubbing up the disc's ability to play (or even be read by my DVD burner or ROM. It seems the "title menu" throws it off).

Also has anyone made a "Menu Reader/Editor" for EXISTING menus on movies, etc?

Sounds like a media problem -

Memorex is a good example, figures as high as 50% coasters have been reported (One member bought a stack of 50 and got 23 good burns.), not what I would call an impressive record.

Let’s get your media straightened out -

    1. * Cheap media freezes, skips, stutters, pixelats, partially jams, may be rejected and lest we forget, our old standby, giving you the old just refuses to be recognized routine :-(

Besides "Freezing", "skips" and pixelations, many times you’ll get a “cyclic redundancy error” or an "I/O error". This message can mean that your discs are scratched or dirty, it can also mean that your burner won’t accept your “cheap” media :-(

Inexpensive media is great for text, Data, Spreadsheets, .Jpg and .Gif pictures and is good even for MP3 music BUT for DVD backups - BLAaaaaaT! It SUCKTH in an extremely Big-th way !

    2. A good grade media is needed for DVD reproduction !
Ritek G04's or Branded Verbatim are what we’re looking for OR any media boasting “Advanced AZO Metal Dye”, this indicates a superior dye application, while they are sometimes a bit “pricey” they are acceptable.

Prices online from Meritline.com have gotten Ritek G04 down below a dollar a disc -
Question - If you make coasters out of 3 cheap discs and good copies from 3 Branded Verbatim discs or 3 Ritek G04 discs - which ones then will you say are too expensive ? The 3 “Cheapo’s with no movie backup OR , the 3 recommended discs with a perfect backup on each disc ?

Bear in mind, Memorex, Fuji, Sony, TDK, Orange Pack and others are quite good for your MP3 music, picture archives, Spread sheets, Data and your text backups and archives, they just don’t work well for DVD backups.
Remember, for DVD backups, purchasing inexpensive media is a gamble, some people win, the majority of people lose, varying amounts but, they still lose :-(

Let's try the right media for the job - just buy a 5 pack, that will settle it once and for all - Don’t cheat though, buy the EXACT media we recommended -

Using good grade media can guarantee you one thing to an absolute certainty, it surely cannot hurt.

    cheers,

    Pete

I'm not entirely clear on what you're trying to accomplish, but DVD Stripper is a fine app for removing bits and pieces from a DVD while retaining working menus.

Stripper is a front-end for DVD Decrypter and IFOEdit, so you will need to install those as well.

Ok thanks all for your posts. What is interesting is that I switched burn programs to CloneDVD2 and the same "total disk backup" that I did with NERO before worked where NERO disks failed.

I backed up one disk using Decrypter to Rip it, DVD Shrink to make it "fit" on the DVD-R and then NERO to rip it.

With NERO those disks that I kept the menus in on all fail to read in ANY of my DVD players and even in my DVD ROM drive and Burner drive.

I backed up the same DVD using Decrypter to Rip it and then CloneDVD2 to "shrink" it AND burn it and those seem to play in my DVD players (except my "el cheapo").

So yes I am sure my Media being "No Name" (they test as "Maxell MXL RG01" but I think they tested as something else before, not certain) doesn't help matters, but I also have some Sony DVD+RW disks that I get a "Power Calibratrion" error just trying to write to (They test as RICOH disks but I don't think they should be that bad to not even be able to be read).

So there may be MULTIPLE issues to try and solve.

VobBlanker is a good alternative to DVDstripper I have managed to remove "Title" menus so the movie boots straight inti the "Main Movie" menu. It's at an early Beta stage, and it's got a few "Holes" but it's worth a try. I have had 100% success with it (famous last words)

You can get it here :- (it's free)

There is also a new package called DVDremake which also does a similar job but it's commercial software.I have not had a chance to have a good look at it's capabilities yet. You can get a trial here :-

Thanks Brian, also just for kicks and giggles, where can I get DVD Stripper? I see everyone talking about it, but I can't find it anywhere.

Also, I have VOBblanker, but I can't figure out how to use it (don't know DVD structure well enough) but when I get a chance, maybe I'll play around with it some more.
