I couldn't find that model at Panasonic's website, so I don't know how many or what kind of inputs you have.

The only tv channels that broadcast in 5.1 are HD channels, some premium movie channels (HBO, Starz, etc.), and some PPV channels. All other channels, you can listen to in Dolby Pro Logic (simulated surround). To get the channels in surround, that do broadcast 5.1, you'll need to run a digital connection from cable or sat box, to the A/V receiver. You may also have to assign the input you use, to what you plugged into it.

Same with the Xbox 360. You'll need to run a digital connection from Xbox to the A/V receiver, and assign the input.

Impossible to get 5.1 surround with that connection. All you can get with that is Pro Logic. Digital connections are made with HDMI, digital coax, or optical cables. Do you have digital inputs on back of the A/V receiver? If so, how many of each?

the ht system has a hdmi slot on the back as well as a fm receiver and the 2 phono connections and a scart connection.
i run the scart connection to the back of the hdmi tv as well.
i also have a starview box connected to the back of the tv by scart as well

If there's an HDMI input, there needs to be an HDMI output also, so being just one HDMI connection, it's probably an output to the tv. Looks like you have no digital inputs at all, so the only thing you'll get 5.1 surround from is your dvds, but not with the red and white connections. You'll need to use the HDMI connection for that.

I know absolutely nothing about scart connections. We don't have them here in the US. Maybe someone more familiar with scart will come along and help. I am pretty sure though that scart isn't a digital connection.

Since you've had it for only a couple of days, I'd take it back and get something with some digital inputs. That's the only way to get true 5.1 surround, from whatever broadcasts it.
    Good luck!

    hi jvc,

    thx for the reply.
Well, dvd plays in 5.1 and i watched csi miami last night on the tv and that played in 5.1.
just got a hdmi cable and a optical cable(called a toslink plug) and will hook them up tonight to the xbox360.
will see if the same hdmi cable gives 5.1 sound from the tv as well if i move it from the xbox360 to the tv with the other end in the dvd receiver.
I think scart plugs carry sound and video but i don't know yet what their audio output is.hopefully 5.1 or at least pro logic II
    will check later.
does anybody else know what kind of signal a scart plug carries?
