I am trying to copy my first DVD-5 (5.37GB) to a DVD-R. When I rip with DVDDecrypter or Smart Ripper by default they do not copy the VIDEO_TS.IFO and other VIDEO_TS.* files with the IFO and VOB files. Then when I try to use Ifoedit to strip extras it won't work without opening the missing VIDEO_TS.IFO file. Could someone explain this to me.
Hi there, I seem to have the same problem but my post is super long. Well I have the same problem that your haveing. This is my first burn too.
I have read that link and it does not explain why Smart Ripper by default does not copy these VIDEO_TS files. It highlights the VOB files containing the movie, but not the VIDEO_TS files. I thought you needed these files when burning a DVD-R. Help?
doctorky1, You are right, you do need these files to burn, but not to "rip". Let me explain, when using Smartripper, "movie mode" will rip the vobs only. These contain the video and audio streams that make a "movie", but not the information files (*.ifo) that help your DVD player navigate the movie etc. Ifoedit can make them for you. If you use "Back up mode" this will also gvie you what you want. However, I am concered by your first statement "I am trying to copy my first DVD-5 (5.37GB)" DVD-5 discs are a maximum of 4.7GB It seems you are ripping a DVD-9 type disc, in which case you will need to re encode the vob's to make them fit. Thanks for the explanation. So if I understand, if you just want to rip and watch the movie on your computer you don't need the VIDEO_TS files. And if you want to burn a DVD+R/W then you need to add these files to what the rippers highlight by default. How does Ifoedit make these files (VIDEO_TS) if they are not ripped from the disc? I was hoping the DVDs I have would burn easily to DVD+R/W with my new burner, but they are all bigger than the 4.7GB, so I can't use the ISO feature to burn in DVD Decryptor (looks easy). I have read Derrow's guides, the Doom9 guides, vcdhelp's guides and the Newbie guide on dvd2dvdr.com. They all are different and it is overwhelming to select how to reduce the size down to fit on one DVD. Would you recommend one? I have a hp 200i DVD+R/W drive with Sonic MyDVD. I also own Pinnacle Studio and have a trial copy of Nero Burning Rom. Thanks.
doctorky1, You are right when you say it is so confusing. The world of DVD is extremely diverse. Let me explain. Most DVD releases these days are of the DVD-9 type, (9.4 GB)these are dual layer types. We can only burn to DVD-5 types (4.7GB) The good news is, just because a DVD is dual layer, we can't "rip and copy", because sometimes we can (but not often). It all depends on how much the "extras" take up. This can include such things as subtitles, multi language, directors cut, making of... you get the picture ? But there is hope !! Start with the "easiest" form. Rip and burn "Movie Only" This means the movie and in english audio only. If you're lucky the file size will fit your DVD-R disc (unfortunately 90% don't). This means you end up with a total file size greater than 4.7Gb. This means using a program called Rempeg (it's available free) this will shrink your files to fit (most of the time, about 95%). Then you use a program called Ifoedit (that's free too) to rearrange the "ifo" files. Then use Nero to burn. (hope your trial version doesn't run out soon) Sorry to be a bit negative, but it's not quite as simple as you thought (nearly but not quite). It took me about 2 weeks to rip and burn my first DVD movie lots of printing guides, reading forums etc ...(then a week for the 2nd) Takes about 5hrs now. Not wishing to be smug, but I am strating to look for "challenging" DVDs. Disney seems to provide that in spades !! Hang in there. HomerJ
homer can you give me a link to the guide that you use or did you just work it out for youself (I'M STILL HAVING TRUBLE WITH DVD-9s AFTER 6 WEEKS OF BURNING)
Thanks Homer. I will keep at it. I am learning ReMpeg and Ifoedit. We'll see when I make my first successful burn.
Mr Ross, Go to the doom9 site, and look up this thread, under Ifoedit :- "Foolproof DVD9 to DVD5 Comprehensive Guide, Includes ALL details!!!" It is very comprehensive, and might help show you where you have gone wrong. HomerJ
Adding my 2 cents, For the real newbie may I suggest DVD Shrink - It's free, can do all that you want in as few as 3 steps - It will rip your movies in generally 30 to 40 minutes, it allows you to compress your larger DVD-9's to the necessary 4.36GB keep in or remove menus, extras and trailers (re-author) and provides you with a nice neat VIDEO_TS folder for you, perfect to have Nero or CloneDVD burn for you. A complete step by step guide and download can be gotten at - http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/dvd_shrink.htm It's a powerful program, easy to use - Give it a quick try, you'll have a rfect burn this afternoon, really - HAVE A NICE EVENING, "P"
Takes me between 40 min and an hour to do a DVD9. I use different programs, mainly Shrink 3.0b5 and Nero 6 Burning ROM. I like CloneDVD and AnyDVD also. You can spend a lot of time re-authoring but if you just want the main movie, Shrink is the way to go. Nero burning ROM is easy once you follow the guides. Make sure to make a folder on your hard drive called VIDEO_TS. Happy burning, Frank
fasfrank, Actually DVDShrink creates a VIDEO_TS folder. Hint: I created a folder on my HD named "DVD Work" and before ripping my DVD's I create another sub-folder with the name of the movie I'm backing up. Now, after I click "Backup" in DVDShrink I don't have to worry where my VIDEO_TS is, if I wish, I can burn it days down the road. At one point I had 23 movies sitting there, just waiting for my shipment of blank DVD media to arrive. Have a good one - - "P"
Hi Pete, So how many gigs were all those movies! Anyhow I just did this: I made a folder called DVD work on my hard drive I then clicked on that folder (its empty of course) and put the name of a movie Im going to rip on that folder...Is that right? Well I'll give it a go! Thanks for the tip, Pete! Frank OK so when I tell Shrink where to put the backup files Do I just type "DVD Work" or do I have to put in the name I used on the subfoler ie "DVD Work\Starship Troopers" or just the name of the movie "Starship Troopers" hehe duh, computer newbie (my geuss is I direct the backup files to the subfolder with the name of the movie)_X_X_X_X_X_[small]motorcycle racer computer newbie Sony VAIO Suzuki GSXR1000[/small]
fasfrank, All the movies were compressed to 4.36GB or less (Please note my HD space, 320 Gig), could have done twice that many on just 1 hard drive. When you click "Backup" in Shrink, a box will come up saying "Target Folder:", click "Browse" and trace your path back to "DVD Work\Starship Troopers" - when Shrink is finished, it will give you your VIDEO_TS folder already made for you and you’re good to go. When you wish to burn, use the "File Browser" in Nero to trace your path back again and your done and done – you don’t have to try to remember where your work is or if you need to do anymore work on it, it is completely ready for Clone or Nero. Okie Dokie ? (Ya gotta' love the easy ways huh ?) "P"
Hi Frank, Pete, With all the posts on here about DVDShrink, I keep asking myself why some people take the long way around to do the same thing. The fact that shrink is free makes it the ideal starting program to try. Hey Frank, I decided to finally upgrade my burned. Got a Memorex 8x dual format burner. The 4x was on sell for $150. I beat down the sales guy to sell me the 8x for $20. more. Seems to work great but I don't have 8x media yet. Jerry
Jerry746, Since you are mentioning your "Memorex Burner" and I'm not aware that Memorex has ever made a DVD Burner, I'm assuming that you're working with a CD burner. DVDShrink works with DVD BURNERS ONLY. Hence so many other programs to get your DVD's to go on CD's. The reason for this is you must convert your files to go on VCD's, SVCD's etc. So sorry to have been the source of your confusion. (Hangin' my head in shame and standin' in the corner to take a "time out";-) "P"
Hi Pete, It's a Memorex 8x DVD burner dual format. 4x has been out for a while, 8x were just put on the shelves a few days ago. Jerry
Jerry746, I'll try to find it (I checked Memorex's web site and couldn't find it) again. I think there was an article in Afterdawn's newsletter within the last couple of weeks about not coming out with 8X media- I deleted it of course but shall try to find it - "P"
