is there a way with mac the ripper to extract part of a dvd that is fast and saves the time code from the movie?

Are you looking to preserve the track/chapter ID's or simply the SMPTE time code?

also, i'm having trouble getting the audio tracks. unfortunately, not my computer and, although i can't find anything weird about sound input or speaker problems, i can't find the soundtracks.

Try "Open VIDEO_TS" in dvd player and play your ripped video_ts and see if there is sound. The audio tracks are embedded with the video.
