Let me start from the beginning.

I'm trying to copy VHS recordings to my computer. I’ve read almost every thread, but I still can’t figure it out. First, I connected the TV to the computer using S-video monster cable, but I was only able to view the computer on the TV -- not vice versa. I couldn't figure out how to get it in reverse. I then decided maybe I need to use my mini DV. How do I use DV as passthrough to view VHS on computer? By the way, my VCR has 2 a/v in and 1 a/v out, but no s-video. The computer has 1 s-video, 2 fire wire and 8 USB slots.

You'll have to get a video capture card in order to capture from your VCR. If you're VCR does not have an S-Video connection, you won't be able to capture via S-Video. You still can capture using the a/v out. I just recently purchased the Hauppauge PVR-250 and it works great for capturing from my VCR and I don't have S-Video. The nice thing about the PVR-250 is that it also is a TV card, so you can connect it to your cable tv. Also, do some more research on this website and you'll find a LOT of information regarding capturing from a VCR. Just do a search on "vhs to dvd".

Is a video capture card required to copy from VHS to MiniDV? I ask this (dumb question) because I'm able to capture my videos from my camcorder to my computer using the software provided.

    Thanks in advance :)

I'm sorry, but I don't know anything about capturing VHS to MiniDV. If you do a search on this forum, I know you'll find more information on this subject.

You can use your camcorder as a pseudo capture device. If your miniDV camcorder has a passthrough option (not all do) then you can plug your video/audio output from the VHS deck into the camcorder. Then you can use the camcorder's firewire to transfer to your computer or just transfer to the miniDV tapes if you want.
