i will try to say this with one breath...and im sure my terminology is not correct, but understandable...

i took apart my dvd drive (samsung) to clean it in hopes of it reading a disc more often. for months it has been acting up.

i was looking at this page at llamma.com and in one of the pictures of the drive taken apart about 3/4 down the page it shows the 'lens assembly' and the 'spindle' that the disc sits on side by side. i don't believe this photo is of a samsung drive - mine was different to take apart. and also the 'spindle' and 'lens assembly' are spread far apart on mine.
i am curious if my 'lens assembly' is supposed to be side by side with the 'spindle' when it is powered off or if it is getting stuck at the other end of the track.
are all drives different or was power to the xbox taken away at a certain time to achieve the positioning in the photo.

thanks for any input. i am trying to figure out if my dvd drive is a gonner or if it can be fixed without taking the 'lens assembly' apart and cleaning everything and realigning the track and all of that.

    again, thank you.

That's the Thomson drive you were looking at!

The Samsung is found in my tutorials.

Most Samsung problems are with the worm Spindle getting jammed! I have provided links on how to rebuild your Samsung in the tutorials!

Im I watched the Tut vid in the link you said, and He doesn't even touch the spindle motor in that vid, he just gives detailed instructions on how to clecn the lens, re grease the rail etc, but never even removed the dvd drive spindle. im a little lost here, I have the same problem, my dvd drive motor or spindle, is all jacked up, its super rough when I spin it.

I think you need to watch the video again, there is a whole section on it...

    It's all good!

No, the worm spindle stops moving due to lack of lubrication and the the laser jumps the tracks, you can normally hear it click and grind when it's searching...
