I have taken a HDD out of a laptop that is fubar.

I am trying to recover the data from it. I have plugged in a SATA cable and a SATA power cable to the back but it wont open on the computer?

It doesn't show in the My Computer window but if i go to device manager it shows there. When i click on it, it hangs until the computer screen goes blue with white writing (doesn't stay up long enough to read any) and crashes the system.

The sata cable goes to a sata card i put in the pc.
I'm running windows 7 retail candidate.
The HDD might be fubar same as laptop (its a friend of mines who had it in afgan and the sand storms ****** it)
There are four other pins which i'm assuming are the jumpers but i can find no info on how to set it to slave. All 4 pins i#are in a row.
I can't boot from it from start-up either.

    Any ideas........?

SATA doesn't have master or slave settings since it is a point to point connection.

Can you hear the drive spinning, heads resetting?

Sounds like the drive is dead.

    Yeah it spins........

as i say it shows up in device manager and if the desktop is booted in safe mode it shows up under my computer. Going to try tomorrow on a friends computer with xp just in case its my set up or windows 7 or something.

Thanks though at least i know its not a master/slave problem!
