So here's my problem thus far:

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my old, old desktop - an Intel Optiplex SX260.

Putting the computer into Suspend mode (and even Hibernate, I suppose, in its fashion) works like a breeze, but when I turn it back on, I find that the screen is flickering in a sort of schizophrenic manner. Parts of the screen will shift to the right for an instant, and the stuff on the right side of the screen flicker over to the left side.

This screen flickering only ever happens after Suspend mode, and once I restart the computer, everything's fine, but it's been bothering me that I can't just put my computer into Suspend whenever I'll be gone for half an hour or so. Or even just fifteen minutes.

Anyway, I've looked at some other threads online. I installed uswsusp, thinking that might help, but the screen flicker didn't go away.

I then thought maybe it's the resolution - I know nothing about how graphics cards work, but I know that the integrated card in the SX260 is pretty much garbage, and my Windows partition doesn't allow it resolutions above 1600x900. (Ubuntu got the max res of my LCD monitor and automatically set it to 1920x1080.) I then tried looking at some of the stuff relating to resolutions and refresh rates and whatnot (mostly Xorg), but I'm a bit apprehensive about messing with that stuff just yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you need any more info, feel free to let me know.

    Thanks, aD.

I haven't had luck with any suspend/hibernate type features on any linux yet; that said i don't put much effort in, i only use hibernate on a couple of Windows desktops and on Windows laptops/netbooks, Windows does 'just work' with hibernate, on linux it seems (to me anyways) to be one of those elusive things/black arts.

    Well.

That's a royal kick in the ass.

Thanks, though, creaky. Good to know I'm not the only one.

it's a known xserver glitch... just use the powersaving monitor functions instead as chances are the laptop optimisations for suspend/hibernate are never in a million years going to work on such obsolete hardware.

I know why it happens.. and ubuntu is actually the biggest culprit for screwball xserver bugs.. but as I don't support ubuntu I will just suggest you look or ask on their forums.
