Hi, just need some quick advice or help, I've just bought a Seagate Expansion 250GB 2.5 external drive, I just went to test it and by mistake plugged it into my usb extension cable from the back of my computer, it started making a funny buzzing noise, hard to discribe, then stopped and all was well.

It did not show up under my computer until this buzzing stopped, normally you are advised to plug them directly into the usb port, when plugged directly into my computer all seems normal, I thought this may be a power issue and decided to plug in a longer usb extension cable, it buzzers every time when plugged into it and will not show up under my computer, my question is, have I damaged the drive, or is this buzzing just a way of telling me the drive is not receiving enough power and it is harmless and all is well, I'm sorry to post in the wrong section but I need a quick answer as I will return it tomorrow, thanks.

USB cables should not buzz, at all. This sounds like a wiring fault with the drive's enclosure. If it's new, return it.
