I did a search on this, and got lots of great info, but need help "putting it together."
I have a Sony Hi8, and want to put many 2hr tapes onto DVD. I will then sell the camcorder, and get a digital one. My question is, what method would give me the best quality conversion, and still be useful after I am not making hi8 tapes anymore. Here are the options I'm considering:

-borrowing friends Digital8 & installing firewire in my PC(not sure what kind of quality that gives me)

-buying a card like the Canopus I read about here.

-Buying a DVD player/recorder. (seem to have inputs on the front, but not sure if they'll convert analog)

Basically, I'd like to get the best quality conversion, for the least amt of money, and have it still be useful when I get a digital camcorder. I don't have a DVD burner yet, if that purchase will factor into all this. Sorry such a long post!
    Thanks for any help.

I suppose the Cheapest way that would Produce pretty good Quality is to borrow a DV Camcorder with Analoge Inputs and use the Passthrough on the Camera to Convert the Analoge Video to DV...

If you are Looking for a DVD Burner for really Cheap have a Look on "TigerDirect" right now cuz you can Buy a 8X Dual Format Burner Made by TDK for $49 or a Single Format DVD+R/RW Burner for $39....Cheers

Thanks for the info, I'll take a look. Do you happen to know if the in-camera conversion is comparable to buying a capture device?

That depends on the Quality of the DV Camcorder but in general it should produce better quality than any Analogue Capture Card and quality close to what you would get with the Canopus ADVC-100....

Thank you SO MUCH for that little bit of info. My eyes are burning from mining tidbits of information off the internet, none of which have answered that very question!
