I thought that I was pretty secure. I have zonealarm, avg, spybot, adaware and ccleaner. I do regular up-dates and sweeps, the I log on here and get a banner telling me that my IP is known. I'd like to know if I am vulnerable and does having my IP really pose a threat?
On one site related to telewest codes, I saw a link where they give out codes in exchange for the IP (!)

    Hey telewig

Thanks for opening a new thread :)

As for the dangers of your IP addresss, even if people know which IP address you are from, chances are, if you have a firewall, they will not be able to hack into your computer, therefore knowing someone's IP address isn't really a big deal. However, people can find out where you are located using your IP address, which is possibly one of the dangers.

Read here about how to block your real IP address from being seen:

thanks for the clarification. Could you now advise me on:
how the IP gives your locale.
how you know which browser I'm using.
how you know who my provider is
and, lastly, why I need to be concerned about hackers?
I'm a little wary of anonymisers, as I would be putting my security into their hands, wouldn't I?

    Hey telewig

My signature knows your IP address and your browser because when your browser requests a certain web page to load, it will give its type and ip address during the connection.

If you're worried about hackers, don't. Unless you work for the president, I doubt any good hacker is going to be dedicated enough to crack your system, and if you have a good firewall, like Commodo, it would be tremendously hard to hack a computer.

    Best Regards :D

thanks. I'll try to relax again but having had to dig my way out of hi-jacker attacks, several times, in the past, I am now weary of having it happen again; especially as I now have this damned Vista abortion.

thanks. I've copied that page and after I've read it through, I'll send it through to various contacts.
Incidentally, when I copy such pages,I copy them to notepad and then to Word, to remove all links and pix.
    Overcautious or reasonable precaution?

    Hey telewig

Depends on what sites you're visiting. Safe sites need no such preventive measures; unknown sites might need them.
