Hey guys, I know this is a tad old, but i'm trying to make a backup of Civilization 3, Play the World. I found this topic, but was unable to reply to it because I just joined and it's over 60 days old. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/43802 I did all of that, and it appears to work, but when I play the game, from emulation (both by Alcohol or Daemon) or cd, the game runs to the point where it checks the cd-rom (mouse cursor changes to a cd), takes a minute or so, then just quits. No message about the cd not being in the drive or anything like that, just quits. Now, I can only think of two things that could be wrong.

    1) SecuROM 4.x should be used to make the image instead of SecuROM NEW, contrary to what the tutorial says. I cannot understand this, I am trying to backup a secuROM 4.x (84.55.0004), so why shouldn't I use that setting? Regardles... I did what I was told, and it didn't work.

    2) The .BWA file is not a good one. I did download this one off the net, from portmac.com. I would have made my own, but I don't want to buy ANOTHER program just so I can make a backup of a game that I have ALREADY payed for. In my opinion, it's absolutely rediculous. Linux is the way to go, you don't have to worry about buying 4 programs to backup a program you already paid for. Unfortunately, you can't get very many programs (especially games) for Linux becuase it's open source, as I'm sure most of you know. (SHOEY: "Not true m8 as you can go to the VSO (BlindWrite) website and download BWA Builder seperatly." I know, I checked it out, but if you tried it you would see that the program automatically exits if you haven't registered BlindWrite 5. So people who actually spend 4 hours trying to backup a cd have their hands tied without shelling out more money.)

Does anyone have any ideas what else the problem could be, or how to fix it? Perhaps one of you would be really nice and make me a .BWA file? I could upload an image file if you need it, or anything. Please post or email me at biohazardouswaste@hotmail.com

    Thank you,
    Steve

alrighty -CptSteve-, im gonna keep this short and sweet as this is not as difficult as you are making it.

Civilization III: Play the World is SecuROM 4.83.55.0004 protected so when you make the image and burn the image, select your datatype to Securom *NEW (4.x/5.x) and read and write at 4x

    HAVE A NICE DAY!

lol no way... that won't make a disc close enough to 1:1 to play off of will it? I had civ2 until my little sister threw it on the floor and rolled on it with the chair... after that I decided to start playing off backup discs. I'll give that a try, but I highly doubt it will work to play off of. Have you tried it?

Not a true 1:1 backup but it will make the backup with emulation enabled.

    it will play.

I make backups of my games with every game. Check my posts and you will see.

Ok.. let me give this a try...
TO MAKE A WORKING PLAY BACKUP OF CIV3PTW (SecuROM 4.83.55.0004

    Load up Alcohol 120%
    Image Making Wizard
    Securom *NEW (4.x/5.x)
    Read Speed 8x
    Writing Speed For DPM 8x
    ******20 MINUTES LATER*******
    Virtual Drives: 1
Vendor ID: LG Product ID: CD-RW PRL 2.2a (matches my cd-rw)
    Mount Image: CIV3PTW
Run Game... Loads slower, but works
Write CD - Securom *NEW (4.x/5.x)
FORCED TO WRITE AT 52X :(
    Unmount Image: CIV3PTW
    Run Game... Program Crashes

Possibly media, or force 52x write? What do you guys think? I can run it off emulation I guess, but a disc would be nice.

Yeah, i'll try new media.. I only have 3 discs left anyways. I do'nt know why, but I can't lower the write speed. I have only 2 options Maximum and 52x. Don't know why that is, shouldn't be my writer.. it's LG.
