This thread is more geared towards making money by selling DVDs. How many of you sell burned DVDs? How many do you sell? How many do you get back? In my case I am selling DVDs from a Mixed Martial Arts match. I'd like to know if selling burned DVDs is an OK practice, or should DVDs be sold only if they are burned by a professional burning company that can do the real-thing?

right. This one is clear. Rights are no problem, as they welded a tractor seat above the ring specifically for me to videotape, so I certainly have rights here! Also, along with my estimate, I claimed rights to the video to sell it. Rights aren't the issue. The problem I am facing is getting returned DVDs. Another thread on this forum has helped me LOTS about using better DVDs and using different burning processes. THIS question is more directed towards the business side of things. So here's a question... Is it smart to get into selling videos of sporting events at a small scale, when my only option is to use DVD+R/DVD-R/etc, WHEN there are DVD Players out there that will only read DVD-ROMs? So, I'm trying to get a feel for "do people sell dvds and how often do they run into compatibility problems?"
Hi keith204 I have given {Cough} thousands of dvd's to people and rarely had 1 returned,I usually stick to dvd-r's. Hope this helps.
If you use the right burning steps and the high quality media, should have very frw compatibily problems. Those people that have a player that is older than their teenage child, should consider buying a new one for $20 if they want to enjoy those sporting events on DVD from you. If not, they should pay for PPV video. Unfortunatelly, you can't controll that. And you also can't control the people that lie and cheat, that will use the DVD and then return it say it did not play. If I was into selling those DVD,I would make it clear that you cannpt use a VRC to play those, nor can you use a DVD player that is as old as the Chinese Wall. I would not accept any refunds-just a replacement disc, just because I do believe that using the right burning software, quality discs, booktyped and good authoring tools, you can get a 99.XX% compatibility. Of course, like I said, unless one wants to play those DVDs using a vinyl record player.
Usually no probs as compatibility issues. But there will be probs as some customers will have dinosauer dvd players and are too cheap to buy newer and cheaper dvd players that play anything. So on selling, perhaps a disclaimer that the buyer of this disc must have equiptment that is compatible to dvd-R ord+R discs. Incompatibility of equiptment is not a reason for refund or replacement ( and no refund or replacement will be given ), nor are physically damage as scratches ( errors on manufactur will be replaced w/o charge)
thumbs up. Cyprusrom - Thanks for the input. That, along with Dougal's is EXACTLY what I wanted to hear! I'm just looking for something to back me up when I try to prove my validity (which may not be much) but I certainly want to assure people that the chance of it working on their DVD player is EXTREMELY high. I don't even want to get into event DVD sales if the highest-quality burned DVD will only work on 75% of DVD players. Thanks a bunch for the advice.
I've done a lot of home vids for people. Converting VHS and 8 mm to Dvd. I'll usually edit it on the TV recorders,then slap it on all my PC's to make how ever many copies they want. Someone wanting 50-100 copies,no big deal. The main factor is stand alone player compatability. Gotta have quality booktyping dvd-rw drives and quality plus format media. I have had very few complaints. The few complaints I had,I told them to try another player and that usually took care of it. Booktyping isn't 100%,but is very close.
I'll vouch for this as well. The few problems i have had with compatability with other people's players is usually solved with the Booktype process.
