Hello to all. I've got a quick question, and I guess it's an opinion question. I've got a sweet motherboard that supports SATA drives..I'm sure a lot out there do by now..my question is, is the upgrade worth it? How much performance increase would one really see from a 200GB Western Digital Special edition drive? Thanks for any replies.
The differences between *current* WD Raptor SATA drives and a WD JB 8 meg 7200 are not that great for the price you would be paying. The SATA vs 8 meg cache IDE is negligable example : the speeds are not much different throughput wise (how fast an app/file opens or saves) the only real noticeable area is CPU usuage. The SATA uses less while the IDE uses more. When I built my current P4 3.2 w Asus P4C800-E Deluxe MB I could have gone with 4 SATA drives but the price made it not worth it. $130 for only one 36 gig Raptor compared to $140 for two 8 meg cache SE's for a total of 200 gigs. Thanks for the reply, very informative. I suppose I'll stick with my 8MB cache WD drives, considering I've got 3 GHz also of CPU supply to go around, so it probably wouldn't make that much of a difference. Once again thanks for reply, cheers!
