HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am using the Avermedia USB 300 on my well-equipped laptop to try and capture my vhs movies so I can convert them to DVD. However, when I am capturing, the picture is really shaky from side to side and actually distorts at the top most of the time. This is the best capture device my computer shop offered and suggested. I have installed the latest drivers and software and that still does not fix it. What do I do? Thank you, in advance, to anyone who has the answer.
First I would Check your cables and Maybe try a different Set... I would also Try all of the Different Inputs to see if any of them capture a good Image... You might even want to try a different VCR and also make sure your Tapes are not Macrovision copy protected as most Retail VHS movies will be copy protected... In my experience when trying to capture from a Copy protected VHS tape I get a Flashing Black and White to color Image or have distorted Lines through the image but it can also manifest it"s self in different ways... So if after all of this you can not get it to work with any Video Sources(TV,VHS,ect) then I would suggest you take it back for a refund or exchange.... The Type of USB device you have are generally the worst type to get because it sends Raw Video data to the PC through the USB 2.0 cable and that is a Huge ammount of data so sometimes Video information gets Lost either through dropped Frames or a Loss of Chrominance or Luminance which basicly means quality is Lost .... Once the Video gets to your PC the Software has to Compress the Video Signal to your Desired Format which means your CPU does all of the Processing of the video.... The Better USB Devices have an onboard Encoder to Compress the Video Signal to usually Mpeg1/2 or Mpeg-4 format and Transfer it to your PC in that format which requires much less Bandwidth and produces Much better quality and they are Much more reliable because they don"t have the problems that the cheaper USB devices have....You can Get one with a OnBoard Hardware Mpeg encoder for under $100, You can actually get one for as low as $60 like the: "ADS DVD Express" http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=580965&Sku=A03-7042 If You have a Regular PC I would suggest that you get an Internal PCI capture card as they are Much more reliable and will generally produce better quality at a Lower Price.... There is a good deal on the "Tul Theater 550 PRO TV Tuner" over at TigerDirect which is a TV tuner PCI card that has a Built in Hardware Mpeg-2 encoder with Built in 16mb DDR Buffer and it uses a 12Bit Video Decoder which will produce extremely good quality compared to the other 10bit decoders which are in most Analogue Capture Cards these days.. It also has Hardware Noise Reduction and a 3d Digital Comb Filter... It also has Digital Audio which allways stays in Perfect sync... Thank you, minion!!! I have checked all the cables and even tried composite to s-video conversion and tried a couple of different vcr's. I allready Know all about your Capture device as I looked it up before I made my Answer to your Post...The same Capture device is for sale for $69 on TigerDirect but it doesn"t really matter if the Capture device Sucks.... So I say again if you can not get it to work after Trying everything to get it to work then take it back for a refund and get something else Preferably one with a Hardware Mpeg encoder in it....You can get a Better Capture device with a Hardware encoder for Cheaper than you paid for the device you have now which is 100% useless to you if you can not capture good Video with it....
