I have DSL and was wondering if I could buy a dsl modem and use that on another computer with the same username and use the internet. If I can, where do I get the modem from?

An interesting question there. Are you asking if you can have 2 DSL modems in the same house? Or are you asking if you use the second modem somewhere else?

I have not tried hooking up 2 modems on the same DSL line. I don't see why it wouldn't work but why would you want to do this? IT could cause the bandwidth to split between the two modems. I just smell disaster in this area. Of course you won't know unless you try. Most DSL companies will allow multiple logins on the same account. You would be better off getting a router than use 2 modems. I'm guessing the computers are not very close to one another in your home. Get a wiless router (With a G) and a PC warless card if you don't feel like running Ethernet. That will run you about $70USD for decent stuff.

As far as buying another DSL router go to www.ebay.com . They go for about $20USD there. at the computer store they will run about $70USD. I have 2 DSL modems I no longer use and have not decided if I want to keep them.

Thanks for your input. I was talking about two dsl modems in totally different locations. I never thought about sharing bandwith. Where would I get a DSL modem?

The only way a DSL modem will work for you in a second location is if that location has DSL. Just plugging in the modem to a phone jack does not mean you will get a signal. Chances are at a remote location that has DSL a modem is already in use. I guess my previous post was wordy.

You can get a DSL modem at your local computer store for about $70 USD or go to www.ebay.com . You can find them there for about $20 USD.

You would have to check with the company.
In the UK, I think they tie it to the phone number (they did with dial up, unless you relaxed the security, but the line you used it on would get billed for the 'call') so using it in another location maybe a no no..........................

You just reminded me of something. If you take it to another location and it did have DSL. Well if that house had a different company than yours supplying the DSL then it would not work. But now you have me curious what would happen if two DSL modems on the same DSL line logged into two different accounts at the same time. Assuming both people use the same ISP. Very interestind indeed.

Your previous post was not "wordy" I just misunderstood what the prices were for. I thought they were for a router. I'll try to take my current DSL modem to that location and see what happens when I log on.

Just get a Cross over cable long enough and conect them to your ethernet socket on the back of the pc is like the size of the dial Up port but bigger and run a network setup manager first on the pc with the internet conection, go to control panel/ network setup manager / Then follow the instrutions /

The other computer is in a totally different location, like say 15 miles away.

It won't work from 2 locations. I used to install DSLAMs a few years ago. A DSLAM is where all of the DSL connections terminate at the phone company CO and are multiplexed into an ATM backbone. The DSL account is tied to a particular phone number and the wiring is terminated at a line card on the DSLAM. If you go to another location the phone line wiring will terminate in another line card which will have a different number even if they had DSL on the other line. Some providers also use Port Security where it will only accept a connection from the MAC address of your DSL modem, so even if you plugged a second in it would not work.

With DSL, a code is placed at the DSLAM exchange where your telephone line is.

You cannot just plug in a DSL modem into any phone socket and it will work.

You have to actually get the DSL Provisioned on the particular telephone line at a particular premises.

If you move premises, and still keep the same telephone number, you still have to cancel the service and re-apply for DSL at the new premises.

yes it will not work this way.
if the other location has dsl on their line why not just use their login details with your modem? if the other location does not have a dsl enabled line it wil not work atall anyway will it.
