I have a BEFSX41 that my cousin gave me a year ago and it still works fine but i was wondering should i be upgrading. I play alot of xbox 360 and PS3 online and download alot on my pc and i donno if i shoiuld stick with this router or upgrade. Someone told me it has the same speeds as a WRT54GL but is this true my router is pretty dated does that matter? BTW i dont need wifi at all i hate wireless connections for downloads and gaming plus i dont need it.
The only advantage to getting a new router will be to get gigabit networking in your home - but that only allows you to transfer data between PCs easier, it won't make your net connection any faster.
Ok after a few more days of use my router is starting to disconnect and reconnect at random on my pc and my console so the router is dieing. This happend on my old BEFSR41 and got worse and worse. Ive had nothing but bad luck with linksys routers. can anyone link me to a good cheap wire router? $60 retail or below so i can find one on ebay for cheaper. Ive been hearing good things about d-link. whats a good option?
The only thing that lets down Linksys routers is the stock firmware. 3rd party firmware solves that; for instance i use DD-WRT but i'm pretty sure it doesn't support either of those routers. I've not used any other flavours of 3rd party firmware so don't know if they would be supported elsewhere. I would defintely not recommend D-Link over Linksys. Regards the disconnecting, maybe that's just down to torrenting ?, is the router stable when not downloading ?

Thanks for all the replys. Torrents can killa router that doesnt make much sence to me? When the linksys router work for me they work great but its like they are programmed to fail so ill have to buy a new one. I use all 4 ports and 3 are usally Always on i dont see why they wear out like this. I keep the router on stilts basicly to prevent overheating. Im using the stock firmware i figured it would be the most stable its fully upt to date.
Oh btw the router just disconnects whenever it wants doesnt have to be downloading. I was simply playing on xbox live no download going and it discconnects me. Sometime ill look over and see where my pc disconnected. It automaticly reconnects its like the port just goes off and on real fast.
Normal internet use ie surfing etc is easy work for a router, Torrenting on the other hand usually needs a few tweaks, it's quite demanding on a router. What i would suggest, instead of buying a new router just yet, is to try and see if it's something simple that's wrong with the settings and/or the settings you're thinking are correct; after all, you could shell out for a new router and have exactly the same problems. I would try updating (carefully) to the latest stock firmware, then try surfing without xbox live/torrenting for a while, and see if you experience any disconnects, and go from there..
Well the router had worked fine ofr like 6 months (i got it used) torrent didnt mess with it. But torrents arent what causing it. itl just disconnect and reconnect the ports randomly. i even think sometime it resets just 1 port at a time sometimes. Whats a good router? Doesnt have to have wifi. I game alot on my 360 and ps3. I download torrents ever once in a awhile. I mainly want this fixed because its a real pain when im ina tense macth of halo or something and the router just does this diconnecting me. Ive actually used 3 linksys routers before the first one was a cheapo metal cased from walmart that would overheat so i sold it to my friend since he only uses 2 pcs and usally only surfs the net. The 2nd one was a BEFSR41 and i got it off ebay for $15 it worked great for 5 months and died i figured lightning might of killed it? So i buy a dynex router off ebay new and the same day i recieve it my cousin gives me this BEFSX41 and for some reason the dynex just didnt wanna work currectly with the 360 making the NAT strict all the time. So i used this linksys and it worked withing minutes like all linksys routers do. Any suggestions?
LOL just realised i fibbed a bit here, i'm always buying routers, i have 7 at the moment, though only 2 are in permanent use (1 downstairs and 1 upstairs), sometimes a 3rd is hooked up, the rest are project/spare routers. Anyways, my money only ever goes on Buffalo or Linksys routers. I had a few utterly crap Belkin's, would never buy a Belkin router again. Have had good success with a D-Link router, though their stock firmware was Fisher Price compared to Linksys. The very latest stock firmware is always a must with routers if you're having problems, no need to upgrade if all is working well. At my other place i've used BT V oyager modems & routers with great results but they're quite basic, but at the moment i'm using a BT modem and a Buffalo router there. The Buffalo (with dd-wrt firmware) is totally stable while torrenting. ..Saying that, the Buffalo's or Linksys that i use here are also stable under torrenting, it's just that torrenting can tend to taked over the entire network connection. When you say you're being disconnected, is it the router itself dropping connection, or is the router staying connected and booting you off ?. Or is your actual internet connection faulty ?
The port will basicly reset because on my pc i can notice this because the icon will show up as local area connetion connected which only happens when i boot my pc or when the connect to the port is interupted. This happend like i said on my old BEFSR41 a year ago and i thought it was my dsl connection but after i ran off the modem it didnt do this so i got another router and the porblem stopped. This router is basicly the same as my old BEFSR41 just it has a VPN useless stuff i dont need. This is why i suspect the router because it done this before on my old ones. At first the disconnects on my old router would happen like this just randomly and hardly ever but it got worse and worse over a few weeks and it would disconnect all the ports basicly restting the router. I donno but ill be using my connection alot in the comming months and this router looks to be kicking the bucket. I just did a complete reset using the button on the router and i reinput the settings. I donno if this will solve the problem but id really rather get a new router since i dont believe my settings where changed at all.
If I knew, I'd recommend one. I've never found a stable gaming router, but simple ISP-provided ones like the bebox or Voyager 205 can actually do quite well with the right software and modified cooling.
