If you're trying to use your own pictures, it is going to look stupid because of parallax error unless you've created the picture as a panorama to begin with or apply some transformation to the image. I don't think anyone here really bothers with Compiz either so you're probably asking in the wrong place (ubuntuforums should probably be first port of call for Ubuntu problems funnily enough). I suggest you just download a prepackaged background, or look for a tutorial in how to create them properly and account for parallax. http://www.compiz-themes.org/index.php?xcontentmode=6110&PHPSESSID=b7c3f63df01ccc9c166ccc5ad2939710
It is cool for about a week, then it just gets in the way of actually doing anything productive and wastes CPU cycles. But each to their own.
yeah.. the reason for using linux is to get the power from the hardware you have on hand.. pretties like this are to make a point.. do they add to your productivity or just make you feel big? I can understand the motivation behind the projects.. which BTW slaughter "aero" but it seems more directed at the hardware manufacturers who need to open source the drivers than at the end user who will go for performance over pretty every time. welcome to linuxworld DD... this is how we think... old hardware has uses..pretties and bling are .. basically... shit you can join us on irc.villageirc.net #linux-chat there are usually a couple of FOSS users there.
