I downloaded and installed the ffdshow codec, and I don't know what to do with it. All I want to do is watch a movie. I know I may seem ignorant to many of you, but I have no idea what to do with this codec. Do I just play my windows media player and it's supposed to work, or do I have to install the codec to a player? And if so, how?

FFD Show is a collection of video/ audio codecs that enables you to play different kinds of video and audio on your PC. For example, if you had a movie on your PC but didn't have the appropriate codec installed, the movie wouldn't play and you would get a 'Media Player has encountered a problem' kind of message. With FFD Show installed you have more chance of playing different kinds of video and audio as you already have the codecs on your machine.

so it's automatic? Once I install it, it doesn't matter where it goes, it is automatically used when necessary?

Yes, the PC knows where it is and uses it when required.

Most players are directshow based, they use whatever filter has the highest priority. So if ffdshow is enabled for a format and has a higher merit than any other compatible filter, then it should be used.
