So I've seen alot of programs that are suppossed to free up ram (and sometimes CPU cycles) so that your system will run faster and need to be rebooted less often. Does this stuff work well enough to to bother having it installed, let alone start up with Windows? If so... what is the best one to grab?

lmao..if you want more ram install more i've used those so called ram optimizers fat lotta good they do..lol..the best way to free up ram is to shut off unecessary programs from the task manager & your system tray especially any background apps you may have running like MSN 'n such like, there's all sorts of crap using ram here's a very short list, don't forget any installed printer software will also be running from startup etc
    search protection -yahoo-ok to shutdown
PDVD.Serv- power dvd ok to shutdown
hpsysdrv - ok to shut down
    InCD- nero
plus a ton of other junk but i can't do without my windowblinds, cursorxp or objectsdock...lol...

I have 1 gig installed, which is the max for my crappy Dell board. I'm usually okay on ram, but I've been multitasking ALOT latley. Especially doing stuff like downloading, surfing, and converting a movie (or two) all at once. I know I shouldn't be doing all that, but.... :) Anyway, I only have the stuff I want at startup, and I was more looking at a ram optimiser as a temporary thing (thus, the freeware).

Like you i can only fit 1 gig & even when doing pretty much what you do i have never been able to use all the ram available you can check how much free ram you have by viewing the PERFORMANCE tab in the task manager, you'll find you have plenty of ram to spare,my guess is any bottle neck you experiance is more than likley due to the harddrive as it can't spin fast enough for all the proggys that are running, sadly 10'000 rpm hdd's are pretty expensive so it's pretty much just grin & bear it

Ahh... never thought of anything slowing me except ram and cpu. I think at the time I posted this, I was using favc to put 4 movies on a dvdr. Set on the highest settings btw, it came out really good... it just took around 36hrs to complete. THAT kinda sucked up the ram, lol.

Try this. I've been using it for almost a year. It's 100% free, and it has options to free RAM automatically, manually, run at startup, etc. It displays the amount of free RAM down by the clock and you can set it free up some memory automatically when the amount of used RAM hits a pre-set percentage or when it hits 'X' amount of used MB determined by the user; plus you can manually free up RAM anytime you feel like it.... check it out, you'll like it!
