The diode will conduct current in only one direction, and only when the cathode voltage is positive relative to the anode voltage by a specified amount. This is needed as solar cells can drain the battery when not being excited with sun or a desk lamp. Diodes can be purchased at radio shack or equivalent for less than a dollar.
