hi, my problem in a nut-shell

basically, im running out of space on my hard drive so i decided to copy some files to a dvd, i have alot of stuff so the dvd (1 of many) was maxed out

heres my problem......when i try to copy the files back to my pc from the dvd about half way through i get the message (cyclic redundancy check)..

i looked up ways to resolve the problem like "cleaning the dvd","copy the data as an image/iso file using dvd decrypter"

i tried and failed, so im wondering if anyone knows of a file managing program that will retrieve the data corrupt or not so i can finally free my hard drive of some space....phew!!

    a long winded nut-shell i know...

any advice would be very apprieciated

cyclic redundancy check... i think that means that the drive can't read the dvd. it may be scratched, etc. i'm not sure of any programs you can use to correct that... try using one of those disc-repair thingmagigers that you can find in any electronics store.

You might try the disc in somebody elses dvd to see is they can read it. You get a crc but they may not, different brand of burner etc.

Always burn two and check both with cd/dvd speed for quality of the burn.

Sony dvd's are not the best in the world. They can vary from disc to disc, batch to batch. Depends on many other things also like the make and model of the burner, and the firmware revision installed and a little on the software you used to burn with. Sounds like you have a very marginal burn and the error correction can't quite deal with all of it under all conditions. The read speed of the disk for playing vs. flat out copying back to the hard drive can be different. Sometimes a slower read speed can help with errors. It depends on so many factors. Hopefully your brother's reader will be able to recover the files for you. You could also try copying one file at a time back to your system and maybe you will only loose the one file or files that has the most problems. Get a copy of cd/dvd speed (free at http://www.cdspeed2000.com/ )and run the disc quality test. you will see the C1 C2 and jitter of the disc then run the scan disc test with C1/C2 checked and you can see which file or files are not working well. C1 are correctable errors, C2 are not as much. Depending on burner and disc a C2 level over say 20 is on the edge. Dvd burning is not always easy. Hope you get your files back.
