    Hi, everyone!

I'm new here and a friend recommended that I stop by here for some help with a problem I'm having.

All of a sudden, my PC doesn't recognize my Sony CD-RW drive. This just happened a day or two ago. I'm running a PCChips board, WIN XP Pro Corporate, Athlon AMD 2200 processor, 368MB of RAM, and I use Nero for burning data and VCDs.

I've went to Device Manager and I've seen the yellow exclamation point on it, so the first thing that I did was uninstall it and restart my PC. When I restarted, the New Hardware balloon opened and said that it found the drive, but when I go to check it in Device Manager, it still has the yellow exclamation point beside it! Gah!

I then did a System Restore on the PC and it still didn't recognize the CD-RW drive. Didn't help at all.

So right now I'm running a full virus scan of my PC with AVG and then I plan to run a full spyware scan with Ad-Aware and Spybot to see if they find something and could possibly fix this problem.

I'm desperate. Any help, ideas, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, so thanks in advance.

Well, it could be a virus or spyware causing the problem. Have you gone to Sony's site and installed the latest firmware update?

I can't find anything that relates to my particular drive. It has stuff for all kinds of drives except CRX230E. They have downloads for CRX230A/AD/K and all of that, but not for CRX230E.

    It's frustrating.

It's the only CD drive that I have in my PC.

My hard drive is set as the primary drive and the CD-RW drive is set as the secondary drive, IIRC.

    What can I do?

Finished the virus scan. It found nothing.

    Checking for spyware now.

Check the ribbon cable is attached correctly to the drive, better if you could just swap it out and eliminate it completely.

Check in the BIOS and make sure the secondary channel is in fact enabled and also that the 'correct model number' for your drive is displayed in there/during POST.

Metabaron, actually, even though it says CRX230A on the firmware update, it is for your CRX230E. I have the CRX320E and used the firmware below the one listed for the 320A.

Click on the Firware update button, and when you scroll down, you will see it is for your burner.

    http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/firmware.htm#230

If, when you go to install it, it says it is for the A model only, you can always back out.

I try to download that update, but it doesn't recognize the drive at all. I guess I need to break open the case and check everything.

    Gah! So irritating!!

Ok, I've opened the case and disconnected the cable and reconnected it. Restarted PC. Doesn't see it.

I changed the cable with another one that I had. Turned the PC back on. Doesn't see it.

It's not seeing it at all. How do I know that I'm having problems with the motherboard connection?

It does see a cd-rom drive in the bios, but it doesn't say this specific drive. It just says "CD-ROM drive".

When it boots up and it shows the boot up screen, it shows the CRX230E drive there.

It's still not showing up in My Computer.

I'm wondering if I should just reinstall XP on my system by now.

    Thoughts?

I would see if I could try it in another PC to see if the same occurs.

It does sound like a problem with the drive.

Have you tried uninstalling the IDE controllers within device manager?

What do you mean exactly? What IDE drivers?

I've uninstalled the CD drive itself from Device Manager.

If you go into Device Manager you should see a section there that says:
    IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

If you click on there you will see Primary and Secondary controllers.
You can uninstall each one there, uninstall the one which is attached to your drive, reboot and windows will reinstall it again on bootup.

    See if this fixes it...........

Thanks, baabaa. I'll try that when I get home.

Just delete the one to the CD-RW drive or delete them all?

Well it is usually only relative to the one your cdrom is attached to, but will not harm it if you do them both
