Sony’s Double Layer DVD+RW Drive, DRU-700A, began shipping May 13th.
Mine should be installed and running next week.
Now all I need is some DL media.

    Cheers,
    Frank

The double layer Sony burner arrived today and I just finished installing it. I did a practice burn to an old Imation DVD-RW with no problems.
I used Nero Burning ROM that I have on my computer,I didn't install the software that came with the drive.
The drive has a bit quicker spin-up and spin-down time than the Pioneer A-07 it is replacing. It is also quieter.

    Included with the drive:
    IDE cable
    4 screws
    extra front faceplate (black)

    Software:
    Nero StartSmart
    Nero Express and Burning ROM
    InCD
    Nero ShowTime
    NeroVision Express

    A Small Problem:

I installed the front cover on my computer and tried to eject the disc. The front tray cover is larger than the opening in the computer's front cover. The tray won't fit through the opening.
I just went ahead and removed the front tray cover and now it works OK.
The front of my computer has a couple of spring loaded bay doors that are pushed open when a drive is opened.

Geez, you would think a Sony drive would fit into a Sony computer properly....

I think I'll trim a bit off the tray cover, where's my belt sander?

    Cheers,
    Frank

What I am waiting for is a firmware hack to change a Pioneer 106 into a DL burner. I think that would be neat. Pioneer already did it so it won't be long before somone else does it too.

From what I've been reading, the chipsets are identical in both the SL and DL burners so firmware should do it. I couldn't wait so I went ahead and got the Sony. When I can do a DL hack on my A-06 or A-07 Ill try that too.
Its getting time for me to think about getting another computer to put all these drives back in use.

I guess I'll go surf for some DL media.

    bye,
    Frank

Edit: Verbatim has released their DL 8.5 gig +R media.
