    Hey.
I've bought this burner a day ago (it was on sale), and I've been pretty happy with it so far. But then, I ran into "issues"...

    i.e. webpages like this:
    http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/238

    and, especially, this:
    http://www.vso-software.fr/articles/burning-stats/mediastat-best-burner-and-media-brand.php

I used to have the Pioneer DVR-107D, and I don't think I ever had a coaster. In fact, I don't know what qualifies as a "coaster". Every burn has been good, but then again, I have been burning at the 2.4X speed for a while now (just to make sure, since I had the time to wait).

However, it has become annoying to keep track of all of the DVDs, so I wanted to buy a writer that could burn DL media.

    Enter: the Sony DRU-810a.

My justification is that it cost me $90, and I'll be getting $40 back with the rebate.

On the subject of the rebate, I have to send it in today, so I'm posting this now to make sure I bought the right burner. I don't want to cut up the box and not be able to return it.

Anyway,I think I got an excellent deal: a quality burner for $50. At least, this is my impression.

I'm not about to buy a NEC, nor a BenQ. No offense.

I was thinking about the Plextor PX-740, but I heard that they die on you days after you get it.

    It's a tough decision.................but I think I got a huge bang for my buck.

What I'm looking for is an honest answer about this writer. How does it compare with the others? If I just buy the Taiyo Yuden disks, will I be ok?

Hopefully, you guys know what you're talking about. All biases aside.

    LMAO.... I had to laugh...

Your SONY is, in fact, a rebadged BENQ (so is that Plextor)!!!! LOL

Guess that just leaves LG (5163D is a great drive and is super quiet), LiteOn (1693SX is great, also), and Pioneer (109 in Bytecc external enclosure is a pure burn king). I own all 3 and they are awesome!!! LiteOn is the only one with scanning capabilities...

    wait......wait.......

dont use the word "rebadged" when you don't mean it.

the last time i checked, "rebadged" meant that an oem (or some crap) manufactured it. this writer is, in fact, manufactured by Sony.

however, you are allowed to say that the basic engine is the same. i'd be more willing to accept that. and, as an answer, i'll say to you.........what can i make up at the spur of the moment........oh..I can't buy a BenQ around here. it's not sold in any stores, and I don't buy things online. i don't trust it. the shipping guys could be playing football with the packages. who knows?

[hopefully, i'm right about all of this. i haven't been sleeping, so i'm psychotic and paranoid. i hope my intellect and memory have not left me yet.]

Actually, I bought all 3 of my drives online... 2 from NewEgg, 1 from Supergooddeal; excellent packaging of the drives in both cases... BTW, I think that Sony is an excellent drive from what I have been reading....

Ok, thanks. I'll check those 3 out, but I think we all know where I'm going to end up..right here with my Sony.

I mean, if you're the kind of person that doesn't like to wait for the ending of a boring movie, then here it is: I'm sticking with Sony because I refuse to compromise on anything.

I think what got me was that Sony came with Nero (which I think isn't THAT good -- too much of it is just junk, like the Nero PhotoSnap). Other things that impressed me were the price, look, bitsetting support, and the fact that it allows 8X for DVD+R DL burns and only 4X for DVD-R DL burns (I dislike DVD-Rs. I always have, and this will not change.)

Oh, I did, and the rebate stuff is in the mail.

Speaking of rebates, be very careful. They're called a "legal scam". But that's going to change very soon.
