Sony DVD+Rw DW p50a problems with DVD-9

    Hi,
    I just bought a HP Pavilion ez5478cl, with a sony dvd+RW DW p50a drive. I also bought a two sided DVD. One side is DVD-5 and the other is DVD-9. I have no problems with the DVD-5, but when I try to use the DVD-9, the player says that there's no disc.
    Is there any solution?

    As far as I know there is no DVD burner for the PC that can write to a DVD9. I could be wrong though. Lets see if anyone else answers.

    Hi, Is not a problem of writting to a DVD9, the problem is that it does not read it.

    Oh! I thought it was a blank DVD-R. Well almost every DVD made today is DVD9 so the only thing I can think of is that the 2nd side has nothing on it. I wouldnt think it would be your drive although you never know. Try one of your movies and if that works then I would say the other disk has nothing on the 2nd side or it is defective.

    I've tried the side that my laptop doesn't read on another computer and I have no problems. I contacted HP and they said that it may be a problem of compatibility of the drive (sony dvd+rw dw-p50a) and the disc, that this drive can only read discs that are 4.7Gb and no DVD9. What do you think about it?

    That is odd but in this day and age with the many formats of DVDs it doesnt surprise me! I havent encountered that dilema yet with my Gateway notebook that has a Toshiba DVD burner and my Dell desktop with the upgraded Sony DVD-R/+R/-RW/+RW drive. So far they have been speaking to each other. :) I guess its an HP thing. Buy a Dell or Gateway notebook! Just kidding!

    It seems odd to me too. It means you will be unable to see any Movie, as most of them are nowadays on DVD 9. By the way, the DVD was a movie or data? If it was Data, try with a movie, see if you can read it (you need some specific sw like Power DVD). Could it be a matter of Region Coding?

    It was a movie DVD, that I just bought. I've tried a couple of other Movie DVD's and I don't have any problem. I'm using PowerDVD as well as Intervideo winDVD4. I just had the problem with tha special DVD that was two-sided. I could read the side with 4.7 GB, but not the side with 7.7 Gb. I tried that DVD on other players and it just worked.
    By the way, the region coding for all DVDs was region 1.
    The problem moreover, is that the computer doesn't detect the disc. When I pop it in, it says, No disc in Unit D...
