I own a SONY dvd burner, 720A JYO3. I'm trying to upgrade the firware to JY07. before I do anything I need to disable the DMA setting. I'm not sure how to do it. I poked around in Window's Help & Support, it produced nothing helpful.

"If you are using the DRU-720A, disable [DMA setting] in Windows before executing firmware update. For details, refer to [Help and Support] in Windows."

    here's everything: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/downloads/720FWJY07/FirmwareJY07Update.htm
    thank you sirs

What version of Windows are you running? It makes a difference.

Then you want to go into Device Manager, click on the + to the left of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, right click on the Secondary IDE Channel, click on Properties, click on Advanced Settings, then click on the dropdown box for Transfer Mode, and change it to PIO only, then click on OK.

Get out of there now, and update your firmware, reboot, then go back and change that setting back to Ultra DMA Mode 2 or 4, if XP did not do it automatically.

    GrandpaBW,
Thank you very much. you were perfect. I am quite grateful for your generosity.
And if you feel like taking the time, what is PIO compared to DMA (direct memory access?) ?
Why was it the second EIDE channel? what do both of them do/control?
what is the difference between Ultra DMA Mode 2 and 4?
I'm on these boards to learn, not just have you guys solve my problems.
    Again, thank you.
