sony q28a wont read dvd discs, only cd's.

i've had my sony dl burner for 3 years and now it will only read cd's, not any type of dvd disc at all. i updated the firmware to kys4 and nothing. i load the dvd and it tries to spin but just makes a weird noise. there are no error messaged but everything on the computer just freezes up until i take out the disc. is it shot? i think it is. any thoughts?
