Note: this is for personal use, which is legal and not to be distributed to anyone else. My copies of Star Wars were purchased.

I am among the many that boldly want to recreate what is mired with so many problems and make it better. The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy : Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and (when it releases) Return of the Sith (maybe even the Clone wars series). Anyway I have an NLE: Sony Vegas 6 + DVD as well as soundforge and acid to do audio stuff. I am not sure how to get the best quality rip and work with the audio and video in Vegas. I have several soundbytes from other movies as well as a completed script with what to drop, deleted scenes to add, and new scenes (using other movies and soundbytes) to work with. Further I have dialogue that will be achieved using subtitles and I want to rewrite the scroll at the beginning. This is lofty, but I'd appreciate the help. I am very serious about the project and even have some voice actors and animators to help me do a couple of things. I've done amateur movie editing, but I need help in how to do this in Vegas...I'll also want to play with the soundfield and add different music, etc. What software will I need? Will I be working with Mpeg2, VOB, AC3 files? Again I'd appreciate step by step help if it can be given to get a lossless audio/video rip to work from and how to achieve some of things I want to do.

I know there are programs like smart ripper, dvd decryptor, etc. here, but I don't know much about them and don't know if that'd work well to do 5.1 (ac3) , etc.

Well I can Probably help you with some of this Stuff...

First off if you are going to Be Working with Retail DVD"s then you should Not and Can Not use "Vegas Video 6" to do the editing because Vegas Video does not Support the Dolby AC3 audio that is Found in Most all Retail DVD"s...
Pluss even if Vegas Did Support Vob files with AC3 you should Not use it for editing because Vegas Video will allways Have to re-encode the File to Edit it which Takes a terrobly Long Time with Vegas and You will Loose Quality.....

What I suggest you do For editing is you use a Native Mpeg/Vob editor that supports AC3 audio Like "Womble Mpeg Video Wizard 2005" which can edit your Vob files in any way you want and on a Frame accurate Basis, It also has Effects and Transitions and when you render your Project it only takes a Few Minutes and there is absolutly no Quality Loss because It does not re-encode the File to output it, It Just re-encodes the Frames that have Been Changed By an effect or Transition.....

Most of the editing in your Project should Be Fairly simple accept if you want to create a New Scrolling Storyline Intro Type thing at the Beginning you will have to create it yourself with some sort of Titleing Software Like Maybe "Pinnacle TitleDeco" or "Adobe After Effects" and then after createing the Scrolling Intro you would encode it to Mpeg-2 and Edit it into your Project....

One Big Problem you Might have is that after you have edited the VOB files they are no Longer Vob files as they will be Mpeg-2 files because the Info in the IFO and BUP files will not Corespond with the New File which in essance makes all of the Chapters and Menu"s and Subtitles Invalid within the Structure of the Original DVD ....

All that Basicly means is that you will Just have to Re-author Your Project to DVD because the Original IFO and BUP Files will not be Valid....

Also you said something about Editing the Subtitles....Well the Original Subtitles that were on the Original DVD will Not work anymore because the Video Has Changed so you will have to make all New Subtitles which is a Lot Harder than it sounds.....

You will Probably have to add your Subtitles when you are authoring the Project to DVD which means that you are going to have to Have a Good High End DVD Authoring Program that not only Supports Subtitles But allows you to Create your Own and Off the Top of my Head I can only think of a Couple like "Adobe EncoreDVD v1.5" and "Ulead DVD Workshop v2.0"...

You can also use Third Party apps to create Subtitles for you Like "Sub Station Alfa".....

Also to Rip the DVD to your Hard Drive you can use either "SmartRipper" or "DVD Decryptor" But I Personally prefer SmartRipper because with it I can select What Audio and Subtitle Tracks to Rip to My Hard Drive...
I find it is Best to Rip the Main Movie of the DVD to your Hard Drive as a Single Big VOB file with Just the Video Track and the English Dolby 5.1 Track....

When useing these Programs there is Absolutly No Quality Loss when Ripping the DVD to your PC because it is a Direct Transfer of Data from the DVD to your Hard Drive But with the Copy protections Filtered Out.....

If you Need any Help Just ask Or if you want you can PM me with your e-mail address and I can help you that way as You might get a quicker answer that way....

    Cheers

Thanks so much, that is kind of frustrating someone else told me to get a good NLE, such as vegas especially for the high-end audio and now it seems its useless. I'll defnitely us your advice. I'd love to hear some more feedback too. thanks.

You Can"t....Like I said before Neither Vegas Video or Sound Forge Support Dolby AC3 as the audio Source...
You would Have to demux the Vob file into seperate audio and Video files and then decode the AC3 file to wav format and then edit the audio as a wav file and then output it as a AC3 file in Sound Forge/Vegas Video but you wouldn"t be able to load the Video Into Vegas/Sound Forge so you will have a Terrorable Time trying to sync up the audio and Video after editing....

Also if you add Dialog to the AC3 file and Cut out Parts of it then it will not Sync up with the Video anymore....

You can use an audio editor Called "Goldwave" to edit Dolby AC3 but it will not output as Dolby AC3 so if you edit the AC3 file in Goldwave you will end up with a Wav audio file not a Dolby AC3 audio file....
