HELP!!! When I try to launch either StartSmart or Burning ROM, the window opens and then I get 'not responding'. I can't close the window down even using 'task manager'. At the same time Windows Explorer stops responding and so does Internet Explorer. My Machine spec is as follows:- 256 RAM 80Gb Hard Drive with 29.5 Gb free space. Pentium 4 cpu. Can anybody help me please?
Did it ever work correctly for you? It is not unusual to have a program "lock up" cause the rest of your system to freeze. Why your Nero is locking up is the problem. I think you should remove Nero completely, clean the installation and reinstall. Use these tools to assist you: http://nero.com/us/Clean_Tools.html (Make sure you have your Nero Serial Number handy. You may need it for the re-installation.) Use the General Clean Tool first to completely remove Nero and Nero components. Do a fresh Nero install and re-boot. Use the Registry Checker and Driver Clean tool. Try and start Nero again. Make sure your normal PC maintenance is complete, defrag etc. Disable unnecessary applications running in the background: Before you start Nero, disable as much as possible in task manager. Press Ctrl/Alt/Del to open Task manager, go to the Processes tab. Click on "User Name". Disable everything next to your user name except taskmgr.exe and explorer.exe. If you are not sure what a specific .exe is doing, you can always do a Google search for it. Generally anything that is under your user name is safe to disable. Disabling explorer.exe will make your desktop disappear though, and you are using taskmgr.exe as you do this so leave it running. Do not disable anything next to LOCAL SERVICE, NETWORK SERVICE or SYSTEM. That should free up your system resources. These items will stay disabled until you re-boot your computer. Make sure you are not on-line because this will disable your firewall and virus protection.
Thanks for the advice, Frank. Yes it has worked in the past and in fact I managed to burn a couple of cd's yesterday! I have already re-nstalled Nero 3 or 4 times, I have run the cleanup tools and I will try your suggestion of turning 'everything' off. Thanks again your help is much appreciated. I will let you know the outcome. Cheers Bob Howie Ayr, Scotland
Still no joy Frank. I did all you suggested above but this time I do not get 'not responding'. Nero just minimizes to an icon at the bottom right of my taskbar. win explorer then stops. I cannot shut the machine down using the 'start' button. I have to hit 'reset'. WhenI use the 'cleanpack' tool, the registry checker doesn't seem to run and the 'driver-clean tool' reports that there are no drivers found. Any help?
I had a similar although not exactly the same problem; I found that Nero was conflicting with either anydvd or dvdidle. Not sure which as I made two changes at once and it did function properly afterward. I would agree with fasfrank, if I understand what he is saying correctly. It would seem to me that you may have recently installed or upgraded new software that maybe conflicting. Have you tried a system restore? I've found that this helps with a lot of problems especially when I go off installing top many proggies trying to figure out which is best. You could also goto the start menu choose run type in msconfig choose diagnostic start up... see if nero startsmart will open then. With little to go on though it sounds like (maybe) there was still some proggie running in the backround causing conflict. If I'm off base feel free to inform me.......[bold] Definitely try the system restore though if Nero worked before then this should fix it![/bold] Later,
Cheers Guys...all suggestions are welcome. I will un-install 'Any DVD' and give it another try. Unfortunately my 'system restore' is turned off. I think I'll turn it back on....NOW!
If start run msconfig does nothing then I don't know, I use xp pro maybe home edition does it with another command I was suggesting a "safe mode" type of start up. I though that it would have been the same. Note that you can run anydvd in safemode (I do) through it's settings interface it's under the Program tab. Later,
If you can't get msconfig to run then maybe it is time to think about a reinstall of your operating system. This indicates that something is seriously wrong if you cannot access a basic Windows function. Dissone I run Pro as well and it works for me. I'll crank up my other PC with Home on it and see what that does...Ok that does exactly the same thing. I think that is a good idea to try and start in the Safe Mode. Bob, I assume you spelled msconfig correctly? Sorry, I had to ask.
You're probly rite Frank...a re-nstall is what is needed. Trouble is my machine came with only 'reload' disk. No OS disk. If I do d re-load, I'll lose everything I've got. Still....if it's the only way!..... Later...
Got it working now fellas! It was a hardware problem! I went on line at about 12:30 yesterday afternoon and ordered a new dvdr/rw drive. It came at 07:30 today. Everything is just fine now. Thank you all for your help and advice.
