A splitter is needed if you have a subscribed box and don't want to arouse the CC's attention by disconnecting it as it will not be able to "talk back" to them, also to split the cable feed if you have broadband only.
the starview also has a cable out connection so you can link it to another box by using that and not having to use a splitter.
