I'm encountering these more often. The last two parts of the extension look like this: avi.zix. Another file came with the zix download, an info file. It points you to a page that points you to a page where you'll find a winzix tool. So far so good. When I click to download that, my BitDefender finds crap. Can I tell BitDefender to ignore that? Should I? I'm concerned by the lack of info online about this extension. Doesn't look legit. But I don't know. Thanks in advance for any info.
Anyone is free to say more about this of course. But I continued to research this online and right away found a few references to winzix which weren't favorable. One seemed fairly authoritative and the author of the info in no uncertain terms stated that the tool is simply a means to carry all kinds of bad crap right to your pc. I'm satisfied that winzix is a scam that folks should stay away from. Here's a link to that info: "http://www.drewhawkins.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id= 19&Itemid=2"
Any chance you night elaborate on Zip & Zix file headers. More descriptive procedure would be great. The link to DrewsPlace, is this the profiteer of the WinZix? I have a Mac and can unzip files but have read in other posts that the file is bogus and has nothing in it. Simply a trap for the unsuspecting.
In laymons terms the header of the file is a bit of information at the begining of a file that tells the computer what type of file it is. In the case of WinZip the file was compressed and the .zip header information was applied to it. What WinZix does is install adware/spyware with the program and it doesn't compress teh file it simply adds a new header. So the file size actually grows slightly larger. So WinZip would compress a 1gb file to .75 Gb will WinZix will add its own header and make a 1gb file a 1.01gb file. And yes some people have reported success with unzipping .zix files with there own compression program like WinZip,IzArc,etc.
