I am curious to know if it is possible to copy my original BD to a 1 TB external HDD and play them with my PS3 via the external HDD. In essence use the external HDD as a media storage so that I don't have to change the BD each time to watch a movie (just being lazy). I have read all the threads on streaming it from your computer. I have AnyHD and virtual clone dvd, but don't currently own a blu ray drive for my computer.

Any thoughts? Thank you in advance

It's very simple to upgrade the internal storage of the PS3 and gives you many features. With .m2ts files on the internal hard drive you get 15 second animated thumbnails on each movie from the Videos menu, kind of similar to what you see on the games menu. Also, you can change the view to show foldering in a couple different ways. That way you can organize them in some logical fashion. Plus USB is sooo slow compared to SATA. So when you are seekgin within the movie it is fast. Hope that helps in your media store design.

Its not as simple as simply upgrading the HD because PS3 is FAT32 and cannot handle the large files from a blu ray.

Also i think you are actually talking about using the PS3 to rip the disc.

You can do this but it will require a second OS to be installed. Also you may need to convert your external to fat 32 so the PS3 recognises it (or create a partition).

Then split the file into 4GB chunks.

In my opinion you would be better off sticking to disc changing if you cant stream a movie from your PC.

Also try searching google for PS3 SAK. I have not used this OS yet so cant comment further.

If you youtube "ps3 hard disk upgrade" you will see how simple an upgrade from 80 GB to a large 2.5" laptop drive is. Seriously, it's cake

What I'm describing is only related to playback and not ripping. If you take a .divx or .m2ts file and store on the PS3 internal drive you get animated thumbnails and it's visually very intuative when browsing. My point being... forget external storage... just upgrade the internal stoarge.

But I do agree that if you have file size limitations then there is an issue. I'd be interested to see what PS3 online store has for HD movie downloads and if they are multi-file or single file. They are designed for download and storage on the internal storage.

I agree its a piece of cake to upgrade HD. A very good feature of the PS3.

Problem is, if clempac does not have a blu ray drive on his PC he will need to rip the blu rays with his PS3.

This is where PS3 SAK can come in handy but they will still need converting to below 4GB to play back in PS3s normal Operating System (XMB).
