i seem to be having a problem with my nec burners,

i have two nec 3520 i=on the same ide cable, i have noticed on the first drive i can burn fine at 8x etc, but the second it only seems to burn at 2x

im not sure what to try, ive the most upto date firmware and have also checked that dma is enabled, also tried a few different brands of disk

anyone had this problem or know a solution,

i use alcohol 120% to burn, ideally i want to stick with it as once burn is completed it shows you a graph with write speed and buffer usage so i can check that the burn was ok

just noticed that when i try burning with dvddecrypter, the device buffer continuously jumps from full to empty during the burn,

could it be that the drive is on the way out? its had a lot of use mainly i use drive two for ripping movies and reading disks etc, its had a fair bit of use burning as well

Are you trying to use both drives at once?
If possible I would switch one of the drives to a different IDE cable. I use an IDE raid card now that has my hard drive on..and then my 2 DVD drives are on 2 seperate leads to the mobo. If you can't move 1 of the dvd drives to seperate cable, might be worth considering getting one of those too..they're not expensive and easy to install.

    hello

sorry to take so long to reply, moving house in a few days so lots to organise!!

well, i tried slave drive (the one with the problem) in a friends pc, was still getting the same problem the buffer was going crazy and wouldnt burn more than 2x, so im assuming it was a hardware fault within the drive itself

just noticed that it was manufactured in dec 2004, so its about a year old, may try contacting nec to see if i can get a manufacturers warranty replacement?

overall im not too bothered i ripped 100s of dvd disks with it and probably burnt 1000s of dvds and cds

anyway, just bought myself an early christmas present of 2 nec4550 as replacements

    thanks

Ok, no probs... those 2 new drives you got look pretty good, I was concidering getting one a few months ago, but decided to wait until my NEC ND3520A dies first. How long had you had the drives by the way? it seems very strange that both drives would die at once.
Anyway, good luck with the new drives :)

    hi

i cant remember exactly when i bought them, must have been close to the beginning of this year, only one of the drives was not working properly - the slave drive, someone offered me a good price for the working drive, so i bought two of the 4550's,

they have had a lot of use, and i never really had any problems with them before, any problems that i had were caused by the blank disks rather than the drive!!

i noticed that you have 2mb adsl, i am moving house in the next few days, thats all thats available there, have 10mb cable at the moment so its going to be a big drop - is adsl quite reliable or have u had problems?

Nope, no problems with the adsl at all... just make sure you have a good ISP... and splitters where you need them. I run 3 computers off my adsl connection through a router which is pretty easy. I should be able to get 8Mb's in the next few months or so hopefully too... my ISP is testing it at the moment in a few of the Uk cities.

Hey, if you need a recommendation for ISP in the UK, PM me and I'll tell you all about them...
