Hi all I've been looking around for some help with this before I realized I should just come here & ask. I recently noticed that Windows Media Player 11 had stopped playing video when I opened a video file, although it would play the audio properly and the progress bar would move across as usual. At first I thought it might be a codec issue so I tried to uninstall the vista codec pack I had installed. I had loads of problems uninstalling the pack as I kept getting 'access is denied' errors from the registry. Eventually I managed to bypass this by setting permissions for myself (on my own PC!) in each of the registry entries for the media player. This still didn't work so I updated the driver for my 8800 gt graphics card & then reinstalled the vista codec pack, still to no avail. I also made sure to delete any other codec packs I had installed. Also, I noticed that the usual icon for video files I see when looking at the 'list' view in my video folder was replaced with a different icon that I can't replicate here. It looked a little like the icon you get when windows sees a filetype it doesn't recogniz, except it had a tiny 1 2 3 diagonally across it. After I installed my new graphics driver and reinstalled the codec pack, the icon changed to the VLC media player icon & this is what the files now playback with by default. If I try to play the file with WMP 11, same result; black screen but I can hear the audio. I know I could just use VLC anyway, but I hate having stuff on my PC that doesn't work for an unknown reason & I kind of like WMP 11 anyway. Oh, and I tried to download WMP from the MS website only to be told that I already had the latest version & it wouldn't go any further. Its driving me mad!!! Any help or advice???
Windows Media Player on Vista has huge problems at the moment. Mine won't even open, tried updating, but it has the same error as you. Does anyone know if it's fixed in SP1?
