Recently, I downloaded a file that contained 2 halves of a foreign film and the corresponding subs. Following a guide I had previously used and enabling subs in ffdshow allowed me to view the video with subs in Windows Media Player but with no subs in Nero. Also, I could encode it with subs in TMPGEnc Plus but not MainConcept (which I usually use). Using TMPGEnc is no problem except for its incredible slowness and actually, I prefer it. This is not a problem as using ffdshow for this is very easy and doesn't crop up very often, but out of curiosity, is there also a way to enter the subs into the video so that any player or encoder can see them? As I'm here already, a second question. As this is a DVDRip of excellent quality, is there any point to using 2 pass VBR on it? Thankyou

Why don"t you Make your Subtitles Selectable like on Retail DVD"s??
That way you don"t have to worry about adding them while encodeing to Mpeg-2....

You can add subtitles useing DVDLab Pro and they should work in any DVD Player ,You just have to add a Link in the Main menu to the Subtitle to enable them when watching on your TV set....

If your Source File is Of High Quality and a fairly High resolution and you are Useing adequate Bitrate then you can easilly get away with useing a different encodeing method and get simular quality..
I personally allways Got the Best quality useing the "CQ(Constant Quality)" Encodeing Mode when I used to use Tmpgenc but it is hard to calculate how big your File will be after encodeing....

    Cheers

Now, I do have a problem with one of the above videos. CD1 encoded fine in TMPGEnc but CD2 will not encode past 41% at 25+ minutes. I have tried 3 times now and each time at exactly the same point in the encoding process TMPGEnc says it has encountered a problem and needs to close. Waiting doesn't help (I thought it might) and when the video is played in WMP, it also freezes at the same point but continues on fine after 5 - 10 seconds. Hopefully, it is only this one spot that is bad so that I can cut it out. I have tried VirtualDub for this with no success. I have never encountered this type of problem before, so I am open to any suggestions. Thanks

Correction, WMP gives the same error message as TMPGEnc and closes. Nero freezes for 11 seconds and then plays fine.

It's now a moot point. Somehow, I have deleted the folder containing the video.

Well it seems that the File was Corrupted anyways which is why you could only encode so much of the File.....

I guess so so but the strange thing is how it got that way. This was a Bittorrent file with many good reviews and off a private site. After completing my download, I rebooted for some other reason and reconnected to the file to continue sharing and although the file showed as completed, it commenced downloading again until I had 2 sub folders for CD2. There wasn't much downloaded but who knows what else was downloaded and only CD2 seemed involved. Weird

Call me a glutton for punishment. I downloaded the same file again with no problem but it still freezes and closes at exactly the same point. I guess that no one who reviewed it tried to burn it.

Well you Might want to try a Video Fixer program Like "DivFix" or "All Video Fixer" which might be able to fix the File and Might not but it is worth a try...

    Good luck

Incredible, your suggestion worked great. Divxfix found 9 errors and fixed them all and I only lost 5 MB of a 700 MB file. Thankyou. The sub played fine once the corrupt file was moved to another location and the Divxfix file was renamed to match CD2. The sub may or may not be out of sync with the video after 41%. It's impossible to tell and wouldn't matter anyway. Thanks again.

Just an update. I was able to encode CD2, join the 2 mpg files, burn and view on my tv. The sub may be out of sync as it extends into the credits but that also may be how it was made. If it is, no big deal considering it's a sub and where the errors started. DivFix is an awesome tool and free, too. Thankyou again for the help. Much appreciated.

Something easy Like "Ulead DVD Movie Factory 4" would be a Good Beginners program to use But it isn"t Particularilly Fast and you can really only Fit about 2.5 Hours of Video on a DVD when useing the Standard DVD format...

If you want something Faster then Maybe try "ConvertXToDVD"....

    Cheers
