Subtitles show up when played on computer but not on DVD player

    I've ripped a DVD, demuxed it and added subtitles.

    I deleted the original subtitles.


    The subs show up on the computer but not the regular DVD player.


    What could be the problem here?

    It makes no sense.

    Thanks for all your help on this.


    I have one more question.

    I have sync'd subs and I'm trying to copy the times to the unsync'd subs using Subtitles Workshop.


    For some reason it doesn't copy the exact time.

    I don't understand why.

    Each line should have matching times, instead the subs are 2 seconds apart in certain areas.

    I should add that when I sync using Subtitle Creator, it will sync the line with the start time but the end time will not be the same as the sync'd line.

    I think that with Subtitle Workshop, if you ensure that the first and last lines have the same meaning then the first subtitle will sync to the times of the second.
    An example might be where the synced subtitles have a first line of dialog that has been left out of the unsynced.
    So that 'Open the door' and 'Close the door' being the first and last lines of dialog must be first and last in both files.

    Is there any program that lets you watch a the dvd with the subtitles but without burning it?

    I know Subtitles Workshop but it doesn't handle Mpeg files too well and distorts the time.

    Is there anything that lets you watch all the vobs but without burning it first?

    If you mean play the DVD from a folder on the hard drive and use external subtitles (.srt files) then you can do it with MPC and Direct VOB Sub.

    Sometimes when you convert a PAL 25fps .srt file to an NTSC 23.976 .srt file the times still don't match up;play the DVD with MPC (select the relevant .ifo file) and note the time of the first dialog.

    Load the 23fps .srt into Subtitle Workshop, then Edit > Timings > Set Delay and put in the value that will get the first sub to the noted time in the movie.
    All the subs change to new times - save the new file.

    Start MPC playing the DVD (the .ifo file) then click 'File' > 'Load subtitles' and choose the new .srt file.
