Hi. I have read the rules and did a search. I have read other posts in hopes of finding an answer. No luck.

I have a mpg video on my hard drive that I want to burn to a dvd so that it plays on a stand alone dvd. I have attempted this now 3 times using 3 different softwares. I have used xilisoft, nero and super dvd creator. Each time it goes through the converting process and then burns and says it was successful. I then eject it and try to play it. It won't play on the computer or in the dvd player. After this process the disc is no good. The computer says I need to insert a disc. I don't want to keep going through dvd discs.

    Any ideas?

Run Nero StartSmart and make a DVD Data Disk.
Add a text file or an image.Burn the disk at a moderate speed (4x).
After it has burned make sure that Windows Explorer can see and open the files.
This will prove that the system is capable of writing and reading viable disks.

Thank you. I will try that just to be sure something isn't wrong. I have successfully burned a dvd from a mpg on this computer before using super dvd creator.

I find this strange that your disk, after it says successful burn, won't play on the computer. Did you check out the program that you are using to see if it is capable of playing a DVD? What program are you using to play your disk on the computer?

    here are other suggestions:
    1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
    2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
    3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
    http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
    4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
    5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch!
    6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!

follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck.

    also read this:

why the +R media is better than the -R media.

when you used Nero what program did you use? NeroVission? or Nero Recode? do you have a Nero log to show us?

okay so I ran Nero Start Smart and burned 4 images to the dvd disc. It said it was successful. I then tried to open the files and view them and they are not there. I can at least open the CD Drive which I wasn't able to do after burning the video. Does this mean something is wrong with my drive?

One more thing - sorry. I go to my CD Drive and click on properties and it says there is 0 free space even without a disc in. Could this be causing the problem? Maybe I don't any room on my drive?

If you are satisfied that you have covered the points listed in the post from IHoe, try burning a known good DVD folder from the hard disk to DVD using ImgBurn.
A good DVD folder will play back using the PC's media player.
If the burn is OK with ImgBurn, you can remove the burner as a suspect.

    http://www.imgburn.com/

    Run ImgBurn
    Click 'Mode' > 'Build'
    Click 'Output' > 'Device'
Click 'File' > 'Browse for Folder', highlight on the 'VIDEO_TS' folder, > 'OK'
Set burning speed to 4x and click the green write button.
    .
if it's an ISO imge to be burned, select 'Mode' > 'Write'

    Attar,

    I followed these exact steps:

    Run ImgBurn
    Click 'Mode' > 'Build'
    Click 'Output' > 'Device'
Click 'File' > 'Browse for Folder', highlight on the 'VIDEO_TS' folder, > 'OK'
Set burning speed to 4x and click the green write button.

when it was complete it ejected the disc. When I re-inserted it it showed as blank.

Does the disk surface look like it was burned (compared to a blank disk and a known good burned disk) - I assume it looks like a blank.

Even though this is not a Nero problem, the Nero log holds information that may be of use.
Select the newest log and edit out the serial, then post the log.

Regarding your previous post about space on the CD (drive), XP does not support DVD burning and the information it reports regarding DVD's is not to be relied upon.
