I have set up a classical Win98 system (PII 450MHz 128MB RAM), with no modern bloatware programs. As for the multimedia, WMP 6.4 plays the video, and Winamp 2.9 plays the audio. I have set up the playback of all video formats except for MPEG2. I have the occasional need to play MPEG2 material (a friend records some TV shows for me by his DVB card and transfers them onto CDROM). I do not want to install PowerDVD (although I have it), but to use WMP and DirectShow instead. So, can someone suggest me a fine free MPEG2 DirectShow decoder which won't make me any playback problems and such?
Media Player Classic has one and its free and small (1 Mb zip if that) or use this one http://www.avisynth.org/warpenterprises/files/decodefix100.zip Enjoy!
Thank you for the reply. I have tried to use WMP Classic as the default player on this system, but it allways crashes immediately after I start it. At leas it crashes very politely: I get a system message saying something like "this program has requested a Runtime to end it in an unexpected way. Bla bla...". Any ideas why WMP Classic crashes? I would prefer to use it instead of WMP 6.4 if I could.
Im sorry I dont. have you tried the other decoder i mentioned though? You can also try K-Lite Standard Codec Pack if you are missing any other codecs.
