I have set up a classical Win98 system (PII 450MHz 128MB RAM), with no modern bloatware programs. As for the multimedia, WMP 6.4 plays the video, and Winamp 2.9 plays the audio.

I have set up the playback of all video formats except for MPEG2. I have the occasional need to play MPEG2 material (a friend records some TV shows for me by his DVB card and transfers them onto CDROM).

I do not want to install PowerDVD (although I have it), but to use WMP and DirectShow instead.

So, can someone suggest me a fine free MPEG2 DirectShow decoder which won't make me any playback problems and such?

Thank you for the reply. I have tried to use WMP Classic as the default player on this system, but it allways crashes immediately after I start it.
At leas it crashes very politely: I get a system message saying something like "this program has requested a Runtime to end it in an unexpected way. Bla bla...".

Any ideas why WMP Classic crashes? I would prefer to use it instead of WMP 6.4 if I could.

Im sorry I dont. have you tried the other decoder i mentioned though?
You can also try K-Lite Standard Codec Pack if you are missing any other codecs.
