I've been having a problem with my laptop for the last couple of days. I have Winxp and the problem is an apparent crash. The system "crashes" when i use the volume control provided (the one built into the laptop) or any of the other buttons (quick access buttons for browswer, etc) and sometimes it might even crash while raising the volume with WinDVD. The systems keeps working the tasks on the background(i.e. playing a movie, downloading a file) and the mouse moves, but i can't click on anything. The keyboard doesn't work either. except the ctrl+alt+del to bring up the task manager (which doesn't show excessive activity) and ctrl+esc to open up the start menu. I have an up to date Antivirus and spyware removal program which shows no problem. The disk appears to be in good condition. There is no strain noted when the system "crashes" I tried advance system optimizer to defrag and clean my reg, but still have the same issue. The crash you describe is basically a software conflict that is locking up the system, or part of it. Unfortunately, finding the conflict can be very frustrating. Laptops come with "proprietary" based drivers because they use different chipsets then desktops. It could be conflict between the keyboard driver and WinDVD, or just a compatibility issue between the keyboard driver and any media player. It could also be an compatibility issue with the sound card driver. It could even be with one of the memory chips as well...the conflict may just be occuring in a bad section of the memory module. Your best bet, will be to head over to the laptop's manufacturer site...and see if there are any updates to the keyboard, chipset or sound drivers. If not...start up a tech support issue with one of their techs to see if they can help provide a quicker solution.
Thanks for your advice Morph416. I'll get with tech support about my issue. This really frustrates the hell out of me. This might sound a little childish, but i've never had an issue i wasn't able to fix. I'm using the computer in question right now, and as soon as i hit any of the quick launch buttons, it will "freeze". This cannot be so hard to figure out. When i go into safe mode and press the buttons (audio buttons don't do anything because safe mode has no audio) the computer won't freeze. The browser one works without freezing. I don't want to have to resort to ghosting the drive. I'll keep trying. Thanks for your advice!
