I'm interested in capturing the audio from my old tapes and ripping them to mp3s. what is the simplest way to do this (in terms of software)preferrably free.
This can be easy or hard depending on your computer sound card. Older computers work better than some new ones. Run the "audio out" from your tape deck or amp. to the "line in" on your computer. Use either... http://mpesch3.de1.cc/mp3dc.html or http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Transferring_tapes_and_records_to_computer_or_CD You will need to download "Lame" codec for mp3 operation... http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Lame_Encoder.htm
