I'm looking at two drives and wondering if anybody can give me a recommendation. Which is better, the TDK 880N or the Plextor 708a?

If your set on one of the models mentioned I would reccomend the Plextor 708A, its a fine drive. Plextor have just released a newer and faster drive onto the market the 712 with an 8MB buffer, the 708 has a 2MB buffer, it might be worth a look.

herbsman, I read some reviews and heard these were the top-rated models and were the most reliable, good tech support, etc. I did not read much about the Pioneer. Any comments?

lol , good to see ya about Rotary ;P)

I too am a Pioneer owner , an ancient a104 !! Never had a problem w/ it in the 3+yrs I've had the writer...

Plus the Pioneer 107 will burn @ X8 on RiData (Ritek G04 dye) DVD-R X4 , and it is also rumoured that with firmware revision the 107 will be able to burn [bold]dual layer [/bold] !!
Plus 'OEM Pioneer DVR-107 8x DVD±R/DVD±RW DVD writer' costs £69:98 at the moment (well reasonable price)

    hi all

    [bold]herbsman [/bold]

    FACT - FACT - FACT !!!

the 106 at a seminar in america with just a firmware upgrade burns a dual layer disc!!!

Very nice! so what can the 107 do? as from this we know pioneer builds for the future! not just the now!

as i said previously! not a bad word to say on pioneer!

Pioneer - an investment for the future!

    thx...
