Can someone give an explanation of how the Chorus cable system in cork works. Here are a few questions in particular I have
1)Are all the channels scrambled? If some aren't then can they be view on a TV thats cable tv ready by bringing the cable directly to it?
2)If there are unscrambled channels then which ones are they?
3)Are the channels scrambled or unscrambled by means of a "trap" placed on a tap port? If not then how do they control the channels a customer get.Is it done from the headend to the set top box?

Basically you get sent all the channels that your provider broadcasts. Its the square thing that sits under your telly that determines what you can and cant watch.
Cable system is now shagged ie only providers boxes work properly.
This is true for cable not MMDS

Thanks for your answer but it does not answer the specific questions that i asked.I know about the upgrade of Nagravision and that Boxes other than legitimate Chorus ones will not work. One of the functions of the Chorus boxes is to demodulate the RF carriers for viewing on an stanard tv.On a cable ready TV this function is not required for unscrambled signals as they can be viewed directly on the TV.This would mean the Chorus box would only be required for scrambled channels. If RTE 1 was the only channel unscrambled then you would be able to view it on the cable ready TV without the need for a box.
I saw a post that was written a few years ago about some unscrambled /clear channels but that was before all these changes to the encrytion.
Please refer to the specific questions listed at the start of the thread when answering

It looks like you mixup analogue and digital.
There are only the 4 irish channels in analogue format left over in Cork and that 4 channels are not scrambled.

e45 what is with the smart response. It is a poor reflection on the forum if that is your response.I wouldn't be asking the question if i new so much.If this is how you respond to questions in general on this forum then it appears you are intrested more in giving smart ass comments than answers.I didn't get the answer i was looking for which is why i tried to explain what exactly what i was looking. If i came across different it was not my intention as i appreciate fuerte197 response.
mgb17 thanks for your response.i have benifed from some answers you have given to other users in other forums.I am actually living in the states and i am sucribed to a cable company here.I am trying to help someone i know in cork.Over here the basic package which can contain anolouge, digital and HD channels and are not scrambled. At the Tap on the feeder cable traps which are an inline device are place that block all channels(if you just paid for broadband only), or restict certain frequencies/channels(channels on a premium package that you have not paid for and are also scrambled)If you had a cable with the basic cable active in your house then you could hook the cable directly up to the tv and recieve the unscrambled channels. In the case of older tvs i believe you will only recieve the anologue channels but with the new HDTV's with a QAM tuner you can recieve the HD and digital unscrambled channels also which is approx 100 channels here. These Tvs are also known as cable ready. My question was really to find out if someting simalar could bedone on the chorus cable system over there. If some are not scrambled then i think it should be for them regardless of whether they are analouge or not if have the right TV.
